The enclosed disclosure relates to vehicle systems in which an engine, a particulate filter fluidly coupled with the engine, a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system fluidly coupled with the engine downstream of the particulate filter, an electrical heating device implemented with the particulate filter, and a controller operatively coupled with the engine and the electrical heating device, are implemented. The controller can detect, when the engine is turned off, a condition for turning on the engine, detect a temperature of the particulate filter of the SCR system, activate the electrical heating device in response to the detected temperature being below a lower temperature threshold, and turn on the engine in response to the detected temperature being at or above the lower temperature threshold.

Apparatus, methods and systems for electrically heated particulate filter and SCR catalyst in vehicles

Systems and methods for controlling and managing ammonia slip are provided. A method includes: receiving, by a controller, data regarding operation of an exhaust aftertreatment system; determining, by the controller, that a condition for ammonia slip is present based on the data regarding operation of the exhaust aftertreatment system; determining, by the controller, that a condition for ammonia storage is present based on the data regarding operation of the exhaust aftertreatment system; and, commanding, by the controller, a heater to activate and warm a component of the exhaust aftertreatment system to reduce the stored amount of ammonia.

A system includes a passive NOx adsorber (PNA) for receiving and treating exhaust gas generated by an engine and a controller. A method includes: receiving, by a controller, data indicative of a catalyst of an aftertreatment system; determining, by the controller, a reductant dosing strategy based on a comparison of the data indicative of the catalyst to a respective threshold; and commanding, by the controller, an amount of reductant dosing based on the determined reductant dosing strategy.

Systems and methods for controlling exhaust gas emissions of a multiple SCR aftertreatment system

A system includes a first heater positioned in or proximate to an exhaust aftertreatment system in exhaust gas-receiving communication with an engine, a second heater positioned downstream of the first heater, and a controller coupled to the first and second heaters. The controller is structured to: determine, based on information indicative of a temperature regarding the exhaust aftertreatment system, that the temperature regarding the exhaust aftertreatment system is below a predefined temperature threshold; determine that the second heater is in or likely in an error state; and control a temperature regarding the exhaust aftertreatment system using the first heater in response to determining that the second heater is in or likely in the error state, wherein the first heater controls the temperature regarding the exhaust aftertreatment system after a temperature regarding an engine intake air is at or above a predefined air intake temperature threshold.

A method for managing emissions from a vehicle having an aftertreatment system is provided. The method includes: receiving, by a controller, information indicative of a temperature of an aftertreatment system of the vehicle and a power output of an engine of the vehicle; comparing, by the controller, the temperature of the aftertreatment system to a temperature threshold; comparing, by the controller, the power output to a power output threshold; and responsive to the comparisons, commanding, by the controller, an aftertreatment system heater to selectively engage and disengage to warm the aftertreatment system of the vehicle.

A system includes a catalyst for receiving and treating exhaust gas generated by an engine, a passive NOx adsorber (PNA) positioned upstream of the catalyst, a bypass valve positioned upstream of the catalyst and the PNA, and a controller. Systems and methods for coordination of skip-fire and aftertreatment heater operation to maintain exhaust gas temperature

A system includes a catalyst for receiving and treating exhaust gas generated by an engine, a passive NOx adsorber (PNA) positioned upstream of the catalyst, a bypass valve positioned upstream of the catalyst and the PNA, and a controller. The controller is configured to, determine that the catalyst is operating under cold start conditions, control the bypass valve to direct exhaust gas to the PNA, determine that the catalyst is no longer operating under cold start conditions and continue to control the bypass valve to direct exhaust gas to the PNA for a predetermined duration, and after the elapse of the predetermined duration, control the bypass valve to direct exhaust gas to the catalyst bypassing the PNA. The controller is also configured to detect a high transient torque demand while the exhaust gas is provided to the PNA, and split the torque demand between the engine and an electric motor.

A recycling loop configuration of an exhaust gas aftertreatment system decreases a level of system-out NOemissions of an engine. An apparatus including the configuration has an exhaust gas recycling system having a closed gas recycling loop system configured to heat gas circulating within the loop, and a blower for circulating gas within the loop.
