Embodiments of the invention relate a bearing assembly, which may be operated at least partially hydrodynamically, and includes a support ring having reduced-thickness portions configured to elastically flex for promoting hydrodynamic fluid flow between opposing bearings of the bearing apparatus incorporated in a bearing apparatus. The disclosed bearing assemblies and apparatuses may be employed in downhole motors of a subterranean drilling system or other mechanical systems.

Bearing assemblies

A system and method of fabricating a percussion tool that includes one or more coatings applied onto a piston, casing, and/or flow tube. The percussion tool includes a piston positioned in sliding contact within a casing. The piston includes an inner wall and an outer wall, where the inner wall defines a passageway extending longitudinally therethrough. The outer wall is positioned in close fitting relationship with an internal surface of the casing. One or more coatings are disposed on at least one of the casing's internal surface and/or the piston's outer wall. A flow tube may be placed through the passageway such that an outer wall of the flow tube is in a close fitting relationship with the piston's inner wall. One or more coatings can be disposed on at least one of the piston's inner wall and/or the flow tube's outer wall.

Coating of the piston for a rotating percussion system in downhole drilling

A drill tool includes a bit body, at least one bearing shaft extending from the bit body and a cone mounted for rotation on the bearing shaft. A mechanical seal is disposed between the bearing shaft and the cone in a seal gland. The mechanical seal includes a rigid seal ring having a dynamic sealing surface with the cone and another non-sealing surface exposed to an aperture in the seal gland. The mechanical seal further includes at least one cooling channel formed in the another non-sealing surface of the rigid seal ring, the cooling channel having an open end in fluid communication with the aperture in the seal gland.

Rock bit having a mechanical seal with superior thermal performance

A drill tool comprises includes a bit body, at least one bearing shaft extending from the bit body and a cone mounted for rotation on the bearing shaft. The bearing system for the tool includes a radial thrust bearing from which cone pumping pressure pulsation originates. A lubricant sealing system including an annular seal gland and a seal ring retained within the annular seal gland functions to retain lubricant in the bearing system. The tool further includes a lubricant cone pumping pressure restrictor system formed by an annular gland (separate from the annular seal gland) and a pressure restricting ring retained within the annular gland. The lubricant cone pumping pressure restrictor system is positioned between the radial thrust bearing system and the lubricant sealing system and is adapted to attenuate cone pumping lubricant pressure pulsation from acting on the seal ring retained within the annular seal gland.

Surface texturing is employed to modify the topography of one or more surfaces (radial or cylindrical) of the sealing system for a roller cone rock bit. The surface texturing produces a regular or repeated patterned dimpled surface which retains additional lubricant helpful in reducing friction in the boundary and mixed lubrication regimes.
