A method for using a computing device for modifying a lower dynamic range image to a higher dynamic range image is described. According to the method, a lower dynamic range image including a plurality of pixels is analyzed by estimating a dark channel of the plurality of pixels of the lower dynamic range image. A histogram of the dark channel is analyzed by determining the brightest peak and a local minima of the histogram. Using the local minima of the histogram as a threshold for specular highlight determination, a binary mask for specular highlight determination is computed. A final mask is created by multiplying the luminance value of the lower dynamic range image with the binary mask. The final mask is then used to determine the higher dynamic range image. A system for converting a lower dynamic range image to a higher dynamic range image displays the higher dynamic range image on a higher dynamic range display.

System for conversion of low dynamic range images to high dynamic range images

Aspects of the present invention are related to systems and methods for compressing display non-uniformity correction data and for using compressed display non-uniformity correction data. A correction image may be compressed by fitting a data model to the correction image data and encoding the model parameter values. A correction image may be decomposed into two images: an image containing the vertically and horizontally aligned structures of the correction image and a smoothly varying image. The smoothly varying image may be compressed by fitting a data model to the smoothly varying image data. Multiple correction images may be compressed by determining eigenvectors which describe the distribution of the multiple correction images. Projection coefficients may be determined by projecting each correction image the determined eigenvectors, and an eigen-image associated with an eigenvector may be compressed. Correction data for a display may be reconstructed from parameter values stored on a display system. A plurality of correction images may be reconstructed from encoded eigen-images stored on a display system.

A system for influencing a state of a user includes a display with a light source for emitting light influencing the state of the user. A light controller selectively controls the emission of the light including at least one of; (1) the spectrum of the light; (2) the duration of the light; 3) the distribution of the light; (4) the intensity of the light; and (5) the timing of the light. An analysis engine capable of providing a signal to the light controller indicating a desired emission of the light based upon selectively illuminating one or more of a plurality of different blue light sources, each of which having a different peak spectrum.

A system for influencing a state of a user includes a light source for emitting light influencing the state of the user. The system includes a light controller selectively controlling the emission of the light and an analysis engine which provides a signal to the light controller indicating a desired emission of the light. The system selectively directs blue light from the light source onto a material that retransmits it as a light different than blue light.

Color adaptive therapeutic light control system

A method of illuminating a display includes spatially varying the luminance of a multi-colored light source illuminating a plurality of pixels of the display in response to receiving a plurality of pixel values, and varying the transmittance of a light valve of the display having filters corresponding to the multi-colored light source in response to receiving the plurality of pixel values. The illumination is modified for a plurality of pixel values based upon modification of the luminance of the light source and varying the transmittance of the light valve.

Multi-primary display with active backlight

A method for displaying an input image on a display includes receiving the input image to be displayed on the display. The image is modified with a first process to determine a driving signal for a two-dimensional backlight array of independently selectable light emitting elements of the display. The first modified image is modified with a second noise reducing process to determine a driving signal for a two-dimensional liquid crystal layer defining pixels of the display. The two-dimensional backlight array has a different density of light emitting elements than the two-dimensional liquid crystal layer defining the pixels of the display.

A backlight display has improved display characteristics. An image is displayed on the display which includes a liquid crystal material with a light valve. The display receives an image signal and modifies the light for a backlight array and a liquid crystal layer.

Liquid crystal display with area adaptive backlight

A method for image processing includes determining edge pixels of a model image and determining features for the edge pixels of the model image. The image processing includes determining edge pixels of an input image and determining features for the edge pixels of the input image. The system matches the features of the model image with the features of the input image to determine candidate locations of an object within the input image.

Edge based template matching

A system for detecting newton ring mura on a display includes sensing an image of the display with an image capture device and determining a border boundary of an illuminated portion of the display. The image is spatially filtered as defined by the border boundary using a filter that reduces sensor noise and a grid pattern of the display. The spatially filtered image is processed to determine if a region proximate a pixel location is a potential newton ring mura defect and characterizing the potential newton ring mura defects to remove at least one of the potential newton ring mura defects.

A liquid crystal display includes a backlight that provides light and selectively modifies the transmission of light from the backlight to the front of the display. The backlight includes a plurality of spaced apart light waveguides and a plurality of selection elements associated with the light waveguides that change the characteristics of the material of the light waveguides to selectively direct the transmission of light toward the liquid crystal layer. The combination of the waveguides and the selection elements provide light to the front of the display in a non-uniform temporal manner and a non-uniform spatial manner during a frame.
