A fixed target solar thermal tower design is provided that utilizes a low number of collector modules (), e.g. 5 to 30, mounted on solar-tracking mechanisms. The collector modules may be rotatable so as to reflect incident sunlight onto a target receiver () mounted on a tower (), and substantially all of the collector modules for a given tower may be located in a rectangular area that extends polewards from the tower by a distance of approximately three times the height h of the target receiver and that is approximately h wide. Each collector module may have a plurality of reflectors () that are angled so as to reflect incident light generally towards a common point on the target receiver. Multiple such solar thermal tower plants may be collocated and ganged together to provide higher overall power output.

In certain embodiments an all vapor driven absorption heat pump is provided comprising a first heat pump generator comprising a falling film heat exchanger and configured to receive a high temperature vapor and a dilute working medium and to evaporate heat transport material from the dilute working medium; optionally, a second heat pump generator comprising a second falling film heat exchanger configured to receive concentrated working medium and output vapor produced in the first heat pump and to further evaporate the working medium and provide a mid-temperature vapor output and a concentrated working medium; and a heat pump absorber configured to receive a low temperature vapor and the concentrated working medium from the first heat pump generator when the second heat pump generator is absent and to receive said concentrated working medium from the second heat pump generator when the second heat pump generator is present.

Apparatus and method for vapor driven absorption heat pumps and absorption heat transformer with applications

Disclosed are fixed solar-electric modules having arrays of solar concentrator assemblies capable of separately tracking movements through one or two degrees of rotational freedom to follow the movement of the sun daily and/or seasonally. The concentrators can include optical elements to direct and concentrate light onto photovoltaic and/or thermoelectric receivers for generation of electric current.

Also disclosed are methods and systems for spatially resolved impedance measurements in a sample of material. The disclosed methods and samples can be used in screening of plurality of biological, chemical and material samples.

Detection with evanescent wave probe

A method for improving the magnetic resonance imaging contrast of a selected portion of a sample. A selected ferrimagnetic constituent is associated with the sample portion, by molecular or biological attachment or by some other means, so that the sample portion is distinguished from other adjacent portions of the sample that do not have the selected ferrimagnetic constituent associated therewith. Alternatively, the sample portion is suspected, but not yet confirmed, to have the selected ferrimagnetic constituent associated with it. Ferromagnetic resonance imaging is performed on the sample portion, and at least one resonance frequency &#x3c9;of the sample portion is provided. At least one material parameter of the sample portion is measured at or near the frequency &#x3c9;, with enhanced imaging contrast relative to adjacent portions of the sample that do not have the selected ferrimagnetic constituent in association. Alternatively, the measured value is compared with a corresponding reference value for the selected ferrimagnetic constituent. If (and only if) the measured and corresponding reference values substantially agree, the selected ferrimagnetic constituent is present in association with the selected sample portion. Other parameters of the selected ferrimagnetic consituent can also be measured.

Magnetic resonance imaging contrast system

Methods for spatially resolve spin resonance detection in a sample of material, with a resolution as small as 0.5 &mgr;m-1 mm. In one embodiment, a coupler having at least one pair of degenerate orthogonal modes provides an evanescent input signal along one coupler axis to the sample, to which a magnetic field is applied, and senses a spin interaction signal along another coupler axis. In another embodiment, an evanescent input signal is applied to the sample along one of two identical transmission line resonators, and a difference of the two resonator signals provides a spin interaction signal. In another embodiment, a polarized laser beam provides an evanescent input signal to the sample, and the spin interaction signal is sensed according to a second beam polarization direction. Certain ferromagnetic or ferrimagnetic molecules, such as YIG, can be used to tag selected chemical and biological molecules, using spatially resolved spin resonance detection for interrogation.
