A multi-channel mode converter includes a lens array having a first lens and a second lens, a glass block coupled to the lens array, and a fiber assembly unit (FAU) array coupled to the glass block, the FAU array including a first fiber corresponding to the first lens, and a second fiber corresponding to the second lens. The FAU array provides for a corresponding number of fibers and lenses such that a specific single fiber corresponds to a specific single lens, there being a 1:1 relationship between fibers and lenses. A mode converter system comprises: a lens array comprising: a first silicon lens configured to convert a first mode between a first waveguide and a first fiber, and a second silicon lens configured to convert a second mode between a second waveguide and a second fiber, and a glass block coupled to the lens array and configured to provide an optical path for a first light beam corresponding to the first silicon lens and a second light beam corresponding to the second silicon lens.

Multi-channel mode converters with silicon lenses

A ReRAM device manufactured using 2-D SiTe(silicon telluride) nanowires or nanoplates. The SiTenanowires exhibit a unique reversible resistance switching behavior driven by an applied electrical potential, which leads to switching of the NWs from a high-resistance state (HRS) to a low-resistance state (LRS). This switched LRS is highly stable unless the opposite potential is applied to switch the resistance back. This provides a new class of resistive switching based on semiconductor rather than dielectric materials. In several embodiments, the polarity of the initially applied potential along the SiTenanowires defines the switch 'on' and 'off' directions, which become permanent once set.

A method for fabricating a photonic integrated circuit (PIC) comprises providing a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) wafer comprising an insulator layer disposed between a base semiconductor layer and a SOI layer, wherein the SOI layer comprises a waveguide, providing at least one slot within the SOI layer, wherein the at least one slot is positioned on the same or opposite sides of the waveguide, and wherein the at least one slot is positioned at a predetermined distance away from the waveguide, and removing a portion of the insulator layer to form an etched-out portion of the insulator layer, wherein the etched-out portion is positioned directly beneath the waveguide, and wherein a width of the etched-out portion is at least the width of the waveguide.

Enabling thermal efficiency on a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform

A wavelength tunable laser includes: a heating layer, a dielectric layer, reflectors, a transport layer, a support layer, and a substrate layer. The heating layer is located above the transport layer; the transport layer is located above the support layer, and the transport layer includes an upper cladding layer, a waveguide layer, and a lower cladding layer from top to bottom; the reflector is located in the transport layer; the support layer has a protection structure, where the protection structure forms a hollow structure together with the transport layer and the substrate layer, and the hollow structure has a support structure; and the substrate layer is located below the support layer. The heating layer, the reflector, and a part of the transport layer form a suspended structure to prevent heat dissipation. Thus thermal tuning efficiency can be improved, and power consumption can be lowered.

All-optical networks based on switchable wavelength connects (SWCs)

An apparatus comprising a polarization beam splitter optically coupled to a first light path and a second light path and configured to receive a CW light having a plurality of wavelengths, forward a first light beam of the CW light along the first light path, and forward a second light beam of the CW light along the second light path. A first multiplexer coupled to the first light path and configured to de-multiplex the first light beam into a first plurality of channels each corresponding to one of the plurality of wavelengths. The M-wavelength laser beam includes at least a first-wavelength laser beam.
