The present application relates to overmoulded printed electronic parts as well as to methods for preparing overmoulded printed electronic parts using conductive trace inks such as molecular inks, thermoset resins, and reinforcing materials such as glass microspheres and glass fabric.

Overmoulded printed electronic parts and methods for the manufacture thereof

A composite includes a plastic substrate and an electrical insulator layer formed on the plastic substrate. The electrical insulator layer contains boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs), which may be unmodified or modified BNNTS. The composite is suitable for use in making printed electronic devices. A process includes providing a plastic substrate and forming on at least a portion of a surface of the plastic substrate a layer that contains the BNNTs. A metallic ink trace is formed on a portion of the layer, such that the metallic ink trace is spaced-apart from the substrate. Using photonic or thermal sintering techniques, the metallic ink trace is then sintered.

Boron nitride nanotube coated substrates for sintering of metallic traces by intense pulse light

A molecular ink contains a silver carboxylate, an organic amine compound, an organic polymer binder, a surface tension modifier, and a solvent. The ink may be used to produce conductive silver traces on a substrate for use in fabricating electronic devices. The ink is particularly useful for producing conductive silver traces on a shapeable (e.g. stretchable) substrate in a low temperature sintering process. Also, a process for producing a conductive silver trace on a shaped substrate involves depositing the molecular ink on a shapeable substrate, drying the ink on the shapeable substrate to form a non-conductive trace containing the silver carboxylate on the shapeable substrate, forming the shapeable substrate into a shape to produce a shaped substrate so that at least a portion of the non-conductive trace is situated on a shaped portion of the shaped substrate, and sintering the shaped substrate to decompose the silver carboxylate to metallic silver thereby producing a conductive silver trace on at least the shaped portion of the shaped substrate. The process reduces potential for cracking of conductive silver traces on shaped substrates.

Printable molecular ink

A printable molecular ink that is can be treated (e.g. dried or curable) and sintered using broad spectrum ultraviolet light is provided to produce electrically conductive traces on a low temperature substrate, for example PET. The ink includes a silver or copper carboxylate, an organic amine compound, and may include a thermal protecting agent.

A molecular ink contains: a silver carboxylate; and a polymeric binder comprising a polyester, polyimide, polyether imide or any mixture thereof having functional groups that render the polymeric binder compatible with the organic amine. Such an ink may have higher silver loading, lower viscosity and lower processing temperatures than existing silver inks.

The present invention relates to an electronic device comprising a printed substrate comprising a trace of molecular ink thereon, the molecular ink being sintered to form a conductive metal trace forming the electronic device, wherein the molecular ink is chosen from a) a flake-less printable composition of 30-60 wt % of a C-Csilver carboxylate, 0.1-10 wt % of a polymeric binder and balance of at least one organic solvent, all weights based on total weight of the composition; or b) a flake-less printable composition of 5-75 wt % of bis(2-ethyl-1-hexylamine) copper (II) formate, bis(octylamine) copper (II) formate or tris(octylamine) copper (II) formate, 0.25-10 wt % of a polymeric binder and balance of at least one organic solvent, all weights based on total weight of the composition.
