Flame retardant thermoplastic compositions that are capable of being used in a laser direct structuring process. The compositions include a thermoplastic resin, a laser direct structuring additive, and a flame retardant. The compositions offer flame retardant characteristics while also substantially maintaining the mechanical properties of the base thermoplastic resin, such as the impact strength and/or HDT of the composition. The compositions can be used in a variety of applications such as personal computers, notebook and portable computers, cell phone and other such communications equipment.

Disclosed herein too is a method of manufacturing an electrically conducting polymeric composition comprising blending an organic polymer composition that comprises a thermoplastic organic polymer; an electrically conducting filler composition that comprises metal fibers; and an electrically insulating composition in an extruder; wherein the electrically insulating composition is fed into the extruder downstream of the location at which the organic polymer composition is fed into the extruder and wherein the electrically conducting filler composition is fed into the extruder at a location downstream of the location at which the electrically insulating composition is fed into the extruder.

Disclosed herein is a polycarbonate composition comprising polycarbonate; a colorant composition that comprises a white colorant in an amount of about 1 to about 15 wt %, based on the total weight of the polycarbonate composition; a fibrous composition; and an acid composition; wherein the weight ratio of the acid composition to the colorant composition is about 0.0001:1 to about 1:1. Disclosed herein too is a method comprising blending a polycarbonate composition that comprises polycarbonate; a colorant composition that comprises a white colorant in an amount of about 1 to about 15 wt %, based on the total weight of the polycarbonate composition; a fibrous composition; and an acid composition; wherein the weight ratio of the acid composition to the colorant composition is about 0.0001:1 to about 1:1.
