The invention relates to methods for increasing nitrogen uptake, nitrogen assimilation, nitrogen use efficiency as well as yield in a plant, without affecting plant height, the method comprising increasing the expression or levels of a growth regulatory factor (GRF). Also described are genetically altered plants characterised by the above phenotype as well as methods of producing such plants.

Methods of increasing nutrient use efficiency

The invention relates to methods for increasing plant yield, and in particular grain yield by reducing or abolishing the expression and/or activity of OTUB1 in a plant. Also described are genetically altered plants characterised by the above phenotype and methods of producing such plants.

Methods for increasing grain productivity

The invention relates to plants with an improved organ phenotype. In particular, the invention relates to rice plants which have better grain quality and altered seed phenotype due to increased expression of GW7 (LOC_Os07g41200) or due to a combination of increased expression of GW7 and reduced expression of GS3 (OsSPL16). Grains show increased length and increased slenderness.

Methods and compositions that affect grain shape, width, and yield in rice are disclosed. Methods of transgenic modulation and marker-assisted breeding methods improve grain length to width ratio and grain yield in rice. Down-regulation of OsSPL16 in rice resulted in increased grain quality.
