A speckle-suppressing lighting system includes an optical waveguide, a first solid-state light source, a second solid-state light source, and a diffuser. The optical waveguide has a proximal end and a distal end. At least part of the diffuser is between the proximal end and the distal end. The first solid-state light source is optically coupled to the optical waveguide near the proximal end, and emits a first light beam that propagates toward the distal end and has a first center wavelength. The second solid-state light source is optically coupled to the optical waveguide near the proximal end, and emits a second light beam that propagates toward the distal end and has a second center wavelength differing from the first center wavelength. The diffuser diffuses the first light beam and the second light beam.

Speckle-suppressing lighting system

The minimization of the amount of power consumed by an electronic device in acquiring or maintaining network connectivity with a network may extend the battery life of the electronic device. When the electronic device has established a communication connection with a wireless access point, the electronic device cycles a network interface controller of the electronic device between a power on state and a power off state without terminating the communication connection. Accordingly, the electronic device powers on a main processor of the electronic device when the network interface controller detects a beacon during the power on state that indicates the wireless access point has a buffered data frame for the electronic device.

Energy efficient network connectivity maximization

View-through sensors each locatable proximate to an eye of a user and for use while the user is engaged in viewing activity. Each view-through sensor has a view-through region that allows the user to view through the sensor. An active peripheral region at least partially surrounds the view-through region and includes multiple light-sensing regions for sensing light reflected from an eye. In some embodiments, the view-through sensor is configured to use environmental light for eye tracking. When the view-through sensor uses environmental light, spatial and temporal information about the intensity of the environmental light can be used to enhance eye-tracking performance. This information can be obtained, for example, from light-sensing regions on the reverse side of the view-through sensor, from an electronic display, or from a forward-facing camera. In some embodiments, the view-through sensor includes light-emitting regions that emit the light that the sensor uses to track eye movement.

A self-powered module for gesture recognition is presented that utilizes small, low-cost photodiodes for both energy harvesting and gesture sensing. Operating in the photovoltaic mode, photodiodes harvest energy from ambient light. In the meantime, the instantaneously harvested power from individual photodiodes is monitored and exploited as a clue for sensing finger gestures in proximity. Harvested power from all photodiodes is aggregated to drive the whole gesture-recognition module including a micro-controller running the recognition algorithm. A robust, lightweight algorithm is provided to recognize finger gestures in the presence of ambient light fluctuations. Two prototypes are fabricated to facilitate user's interaction with smart glasses and smart watches.

Self-powered gesture recognition with ambient light

An infrared (IR)-based gesture sensing and detection system that includes at least one IR sensor for sensing micro gestures of one or more heat-radiating bodies made within a gesture-sensing region located proximate to the IR sensor. Each unique micro gesture may be used as a control gesture for controlling one or more controllable devices. Non-limiting examples of controllable devices include smart wearable device, handheld computing devices, and smart appliances, among many others. In some embodiments, each IR sensor is a passive IR sensor based on a pyroelectric material, and the IR-based gesture sensing and detection system is configured to consume minimal power to operate.

Energy efficient maximization of network connectivity

The present invention concerns the replication of data, in particular the replication of data in a peer-to-peer network of mobile devices. Each device stores a plurality of data items. When two devices come into range, a decision as to whether to replicate a data item is made in dependence the extent to which that data item has been requested by other devices, and (b) the extent to which that data item is replicated on other devices. In this way, both the demand and supply of a data item are taken into account.

A correlation-based rate adaptation scheme (CORA) is enabled for practical communication devices that provides for communication data rate adaptation in a complex and/or rapidly changing communication environment. Correlations may be determined between adjustable parameters of a communication scheme and one or more performance metrics and/or communication scheme operating regimes. In the context of the correlation-based rate adaptation scheme, adjustable parameters of the communication scheme may be considered as defining a multi-dimensional parameter space, and the determined correlations may be considered as correlation maps that may be used to guide parameter selection and adjustment. The use of correlation maps enables extraction of information from imperfect and/or incomplete measurements, and the information collected in the correlation maps may be used to tune corresponding communication scheme parameters to enhance communication performance.
