A method for estimating wear of a polymer drive belt of a continuously variable transmission (CVT) provided in a vehicle is disclosed. The method comprises: determining a first belt wear-affecting factor based on at least one first operating parameter of the vehicle; determining a second belt wear-affecting factor based on at least one second operating parameter of the vehicle; applying the first and second wear-affecting factors to a belt wear-representative parameter to obtain an adjusted belt wear-representative parameter; and adjusting a total belt wear-representative parameter based on the adjusted belt wear-representative parameter to obtain an updated total belt wear-representative parameter. A vehicle having an electronic control unit configured to perform the method is also disclosed.

Method for estimating wear of a polymer drive belt of a continuously variable transmission

A drive pulley for a continuously variable transmission comprising a fixed sheave having a first sheave face, a movable sheave axially movable relative to the fixed sheave along an axis of rotation of the continuously variable transmission, the movable sheave having a second sheave face, the fixed sheave and the movable sheave rotating about the axis of rotation and a separation measured at a constant radial distance from the axis of rotation along an axial direction between the first sheave face and the second sheave face, the separation varying around the axis of rotation.

Continuously variable transmission drive pulley

A drive pulley for a continuously variable transmission (CVT) has a pulley shaft with a fixed sheave, a movable sheave and a back plate thereon. The movable sheave has a movable sheave surface with first and second surface portions that faces the back plate. A biasing member biases the sheaves away from each other. A slider is disposed between the back plate and the movable sheave. The slider has a flat engagement zone surface, and a curved driving zone surface extending outward from the engagement zone surface. From rest, as the pulley shaft accelerates, the engagement zone surface of the slider slides radially outward against the first portion of the movable sheave surface and then the driving zone surface of the slider slides radially outward against the second portion of the movable sheave thereby pushing the movable sheave toward the fixed sheave. A vehicle having the CVT is also disclosed.

Drive pulley for a continuously variable transmission

A drive pulley for a CVT has a fixed sheave, a movable sheave, a spider, a biasing member biasing the movable sheave axially away from the fixed sheave, at least one centrifugal actuator and at least one slider assembly. The at least one slider assembly has a slider block connected to one of the movable sheave and the spider and abutting another one of the movable sheave and the spider. The slider block slides along the other one of the movable sheave and the spider as the movable sheave moves axially. The at least one slider assembly transfers torque between the movable sheave and the spider. A slider block for a drive pulley of a CVT is also described.

Monitoring is provided for a drive belt of a continuously variable transmission (CVT) mounted in a vehicle having a motor driving the CVT. A rotational speed of the motor and a power level of the motor are sensed. An abuse indicator for the drive belt is set when, concurrently, the rotational speed of the motor increases at a rate that exceeds a change threshold and the power level of the motor exceeds a power threshold. A level of abuse of the drive belt is calculated based on a speed of the vehicle and on a drive belt temperature. Damage to the drive belt may be prevented by limiting a power output of the motor when an accumulated level of abuse exceeds an abuse threshold. A vehicle having an electronic control unit configured to perform the method is also disclosed.

Method for monitoring a drive belt of a continuously variable transmission and method for preventing damage to the drive belt

A snowmobile includes a frame, a tunnel, a seat, an endless track, at least one ski, a handlebar, a cowling defining an engine compartment, an engine, a continuously variable transmission (CVT) operatively connecting the engine to the endless track, and a pulley guard assembly disposed over at least a portion of the CVT. The CVT includes a primary pulley, a secondary pulley, and an endless flexible member operatively connecting the primary pulley to the secondary pulley. The pulley guard assembly is disposed between the CVT and a lateral side of the cowling, and defines an air inlet. The air inlet fluidly communicates with a space defined between the pulley guard assembly and the lateral side. In some implementations, the cowling defines an air inlet. In some implementations, an air duct fluidly connects the air inlet of the cowling to the air inlet of the pulley guard assembly.

Snowmobile having an air-cooled continuously variable transmission

A drive pulley for a CVT has a fixed sheave, a fixed sheave shaft fixedly connected to the fixed sheave, a movable sheave, a movable sheave shaft fixedly connected to the movable sheave, a spider and at least one centrifugal actuator. The fixed sheave shaft is disposed at least in part inside the movable sheave shaft. The movable sheave is disposed axially between the spider and the fixed sheave. A biasing member biases the movable sheave axially away from the fixed sheave. A torque transfer assembly is operatively connected to at least one of the fixed sheave and the movable sheave. The torque transfer assembly transfers torque between the fixed sheave and the movable sheave. The biasing member, the at least one centrifugal actuator and the torque transfer assembly are disposed radially outward of the fixed and movable sheave shafts.

A drive pulley for a CVT has a fixed sheave, a movable sheave, a spider, a biasing member biasing the movable sheave axially away from the fixed sheave, at least one centrifugal actuator and first and second rollers rotationally connected to one of the movable sheave and the spider. The first roller rolls along the other one of the movable sheave and the spider as the movable sheave moves axially. The second roller rolls along the other one of the movable sheave and the spider as the movable sheave moves axially. The first and second rollers transfer torque between the movable sheave and the spider.

A centrifugally actuated driving pulley for a continuously variable transmission (CVT) has a movable sheave that is connected to the fixed sheave via a ball spline assembly. Also disclosed is a driving pulley for a CVT having a movable sheave that is connected to the fixed sheave via a ball spline assembly, where at least some of the outer grooves receiving the ball bearings of the ball spline assembly are angularly offset from at least some of the corresponding inner grooves receiving the ball bearings of the ball spline assembly. Also disclosed is a driving pulley for a CVT having a movable sheave that is connected to the fixed sheave via a ball spline assembly, where at least some of the outer and inner grooves receiving the ball bearings of the ball spline assembly have a generally ogival cross-section. A CVT and a vehicle having a CVT are also disclosed.

Continuously variable transmission driving pulley

A method for forming a profile having at least three consecutive concave surfaces in an internal surface of a metal part includes piercing the metal part to create at least three consecutive concave surfaces. First, second and third concave surfaces respectively have first, second and third radii of curvature. The second concave surface is between the first and third concave surfaces. The second radius of curvature is different from the first and third radii of curvature. The method includes carburizing the metal part, grinding the second concave surface, and linear broaching the first and third concave surfaces with an abrasive-covered broach. A method for forming a groove in a surface of a metal part includes broaching the surface to create a groove having a groove surface, carburizing the metal part, and broaching a portion of the groove surface with an abrasive-covered broach after carburizing the metal part.

Groove manufacturing method

A drive pulley for a CVT has a fixed sheave, a movable sheave, a spider, a biasing member biasing the movable sheave axially away from the fixed sheave, at least one centrifugal actuator and at least one roller assembly. The at least one roller assembly has first and second rollers rotationally connected to one of the movable sheave and the spider and abutting another one of the movable sheave and the spider, the first roller rolling along the other one of the movable sheave and the spider as the movable sheave moves axially, the second roller rolling along the other one of the movable sheave and the spider as the movable sheave moves axially. The first and second rollers transfer torque between the movable sheave and the spider.

A drive pulley for a continuously variable transmission includes a fixed sheave and a movable sheave rotationally fixed relative to the fixed sheave. A housing is axially and rotationally fixed relative to the fixed sheave. At least one centrifugal actuator includes an arm pivotally connected to one of the movable sheave and the housing of the fixed sheave at a first pivot axis. The arm pivots away from the one of the movable sheave and the housing about the first pivot axis as a speed of rotation of the drive pulley increases and pushes against another one of the movable sheave and the housing thereby moving the movable sheave axially toward the fixed sheave. The arm is movable relative to the first pivot axis by pivoting the at least one arm about a second pivot axis. The second pivot axis is offset from the first pivot axis.

A snowmobile is disclosed having improved drive train including a continuously variable transmission (CVT) having a drive belt looped around a driving pulley and a driven pulley, and a transversely arranged jackshaft wherein the driven pulley is connected directly onto the outer surface of one end of the jackshaft. The transverse jackshaft is preferably made from a thin-walled hollow tube and the driven pulley is preferably press fitted thereon. A method of assembling a snowmobile drive train is also disclosed.

A continuously variable transmission driven-pulley cam having a third cam surface which decreases the travel distance of the roller preventing the drive belt from dropping to a lower radius, thus preventing the transmission from going into a higher gear ratio upon inversion of torque transmitted to the driven pulley. The cam further includes a locking surface which prevents the roller from travelling axially to the cam, thus prevents the inner sheave from moving away from the outer sheave when the driven pulley is operating in the reverse direction. A continuously variable transmission driven-pulley cam roller assembly includes an inner roller and an outer roller wherein the diameters of the inner and outer rollers are different.

Continuously variable transmission driven-pulley cam having three cam surfaces and roller therefor

A pulley system for use in a constant variable transmission includes a pair of pulley sheaves or flanges mechanically linked by a belt so that the outer surfaces of the belt interact with the inner surfaces of the flanges. At least one of the pulley flanges has an inclined inner surface disposed at an angle that changes progressively based on a curve have a variable radius. For example, the sheave angle can change progressively from 9 degrees to 12 degrees or from 12 degrees to 14 degrees, with no sharp or stepped edges. The belt can have a complementary angled surface also. The progressively variable angle allows the flange surface to more closely match the side surface of the belt, which can increase the belt life be reducing stress experienced by the belt. The pulley system is useable in a transmission for a vehicle, for example a snowmobile or an all terrain vehicle.
