A system for providing power back-off includes a channel monitor to measure channel conditions associated with a communication channel between a receiver and a transmitter operating at multiple carrier frequencies. A system monitor retrieves one or more system characteristics associated with the receiver and the transmitter. A mapping module maps measured values of the channel conditions to a number of time slots. A power back off (PBO) module determines a value for an optimal PBO for each time slot based on the measured values of the channel conditions for that time slot and the system characteristics. The communication channel includes a cyclo-stationary channel, and the time slots correspond to a time period of the cyclo-stationary channel.

Determining an optimal power back-off value

Systems and methods according to aspects of the subject technology provide non-interruptive filtering of transmission line communications. The non-interruptive filtering may physically isolate, in the frequency domain, independent networks that share a common transmission media, such as mains wires that are used to deliver both alternating current (AC) power and power line communication signals. The isolation provided by the non-interruptive filtering prevents the transmissions from the independent networks from interfering with each other. In one or more implementations, the non-interruptive filtering may be provided by one or more filters that include cores, such as ferrite cores, around which two mains wires, e.g. a mains live wire and a mains neutral wire, can be wound in opposite directions, respectively. Currents traveling on the mains wires through the filter in opposite phases cancel each other out, thereby blocking symmetric power line transmissions, while allowing AC power to pass through.

Non-interruptive filtering of transmission line communications

A system for coordinating transmissions of power line communication (PLC) devices may include a processor and a memory. The processor may be configured to receive channel state information (CSI) from primary PLC devices. The primary PLC devices may be communicatively coupled to secondary PLC devices via collocated power lines, such as bundled power lines. Thus, the transmission of a primary PLC device over a power line to a secondary PLC device may be electromagnetically coupled onto the other power lines, thereby causing far-end crosstalk (FEXT) interference with respect to other secondary PLC devices. The processor may be configured to determine precoding information for compensating for the FEXT interference based at least on the received CSI. The processor may be configured to provide at least a portion of the precoding information to the primary PLC devices and to coordinate precoded transmissions of the primary PLC devices to mitigate the FEXT interference.

Coordinating transmissions of power line communication (PLC) devices

A network isolation system may include a network interface, a power level detector, and a processor. The network interface may be configured to receive signals over channels, where the signals include at least one local network signal, e.g. a signal originating on a local network, and at least one non-local network signal, e.g. a signal originating on a non-local network. The power level detector may be configured to determine attenuation values of the received signals. The signal processor may be configured to discard a first signal and reallocate the channel over which the first signal was received, without processing the first signal in a frequency domain, when the attenuation value of the first signal fails to satisfy a signal threshold. In one or more implementations, the signal threshold may differentiate the local network signal from the non-local network signal based at least in part on the determined attenuation values.

Network isolation system

A Power Line Communications (PLC) device includes a processing module, memory, and a communication interface. The PLC device determines, at a PLC Physical Layer (PHY), a noise cycle of a power main coupled to the PLC interface. Based upon the noise cycle, the PLC device determines a higher noise period and a lower noise period of the noise cycle and then allocates, by a PLC Media Access Control (MAC) layer, first communication operations in the higher noise period and differing second communication operations in the lower noise period. Such operations may include adjusting framing of PLC MAC layer frames to have a first frame construct during the higher noise period and second frame construct during the lower noise period. Other differences in operations may be coding operations, either block or channel codes, QoS operations, restricting communications, redundant Acknowledgement (ACK) operations, or differing PLC standardized operations during the differing periods.
