A system for preventing inadvertent or untimely parameter changes to an active online field device from a secondary system different from a distributed control system application providing control instructions to the field device, where the parameter changes may cause detrimental effects to a plant process or activity. A request for a parameter change from the secondary system may be intercepted before the request is received by a field device or a controller for evaluation by an operator of the distributed control system. The validation process may provide a plant operator with override authority to approve or deny a set of critical parameter changes to an active field device or other active plant device.

A method of and system for implementing a search function to bypass a sequential hierarchical menu selection path to access a device parameter, where hierarchical menus are generated based on an electronic device description (EDD) and interpreted using an EDD engine. The search function provides a first parameter result set without rendering display characteristics to provide a user a simple initial display of possible matches. A user selection of a desired device parameter is received and a device parameter view may be retrieved containing the desired device parameter and rendered on a user interface.

A method of sequencing a logical transfer of wireless nodes between wireless mesh networks includes iteratively evaluating each wireless node in a first set of wireless nodes to be transferred. Each evaluation includes a predictive analysis of a source wireless mesh network which tests communications between the gateway of the source wireless mesh network and each of the remaining wireless nodes, and a predictive analysis of the wireless node under evaluation in a destination wireless mesh network which tests communications between the gateway of the destination wireless mesh network and the wireless node under evaluation. The wireless node under evaluation is appended to a second set of wireless nodes to be transferred in response to the first predictive analysis of the source mesh network, and the predictive analysis of the wireless node under evaluation. The wireless nodes are structured in the second set in order of priority of transfer.

A system and method for configuring wireless process mesh networks is provided. The system includes a processor, user interface module, memory, and an analysis module. The user interface module is configured to generate a user interface to receive user-provided mesh network design parameters. Memory is coupled to the processor and stores information indicative of a plurality of wireless process mesh networks and associated wireless field devices. The analysis module is configured to analyze the information indicative of the plurality of wireless process mesh networks and generate an alternate wireless mesh network configuration based on the user-provided mesh network design parameters.

Predictive wireless connectivity diagnostics for a wireless mesh network in a process control system includes generating predicted pinch points and potential pinch points in response to a connectivity condition. The connectivity condition is an anticipated failure of a communication ability within the wireless mesh network. The predicted pinch points are generated as a function of the failure of the communication ability and communication paths within the wireless mesh network. The potential pinch points are generated as a function of the failure of the communication ability and the number of neighbors in direct wireless communication for each wireless node. The potential pinch point is a wireless node that has less than a threshold number of neighboring wireless communication devices in direct wireless communication with the wireless node.
