A system and method for augmented reality (AR) visor light security employs an optical shutter to mitigate illumination escaping from a see-through waveguide holographic AR display incorporated with a ballistic visor. Based on a security level of the environment, the user selects an auto or manual mode to command a full transmittance, partial transmittance, or full occlusion automatically set via ambient sensors within the system to remove glare and better view a contrast of AR images presented on the waveguide. In high security, the user relies solely on enhanced vision systems display on the waveguide for situational awareness and desire a full bi-directional occlusion of the optical shutter allowing zero emissions from the visor. An optical shutter sensor continuously measures the current level of occlusion to ensure it matches a commanded occlusion and if not, the system disables the display source and removes the occlusion.

A head worn display device is disclosed. Each of two display assemblies includes a first waveguide with a field of view and a second waveguide with a field of view, where the fields of view are overlapped to generate a combined field of view for each of the display assemblies. Each of the display assemblies further includes a first collimator and a second collimator, where each collimator is configured to direct illumination through the waveguide stack along a single axis, and where each collimator is rotated a select angle to offset the combined field of view to merge collimator pupils and generate a seamless total field of view for each of the display assemblies. Each of the display assemblies are rotated a select angle to offset the respective total fields of view along the single axis and generate a seamless wide field of view for the head worn display device.

A waveguide based fused vision system includes a helmet mounted or head worn sensor module and a display assembly. The display assembly includes a frame including a pair of waveguide combiners and a pair of projectors associated with waveguide combiners. The display assembly also includes a sensor module. The pair of projectors is disposed on opposite sides of a frame. The sensor module is disposed substantially above the frame and includes a first sensor, a second sensor, a video processing circuit, and a symbol generator. The video processing circuit is configured to merge first sensor information from the first sensor and first symbols from the symbol generator and to merge second symbols and the second sensor information for displaying conformally the real world scene.

Waveguide based fused vision system for a helmet mounted or head worn application

An apparatus for providing an optical display includes an optical substrate for propagating light received from a light source, a first set of one or more switchable diffractive elements in the substrate, and a second set of one or more switchable diffractive elements in the substrate. Each diffractive element in the second set corresponds to a diffractive element in the first set. Each of the diffractive elements in the first and second sets is configured to switch between on and off states. One of the states is for diffracting light and the other state for allowing light to pass through. Each of the first set of diffractive elements is configured to diffract the light at an angle for propagation in the substrate. Each of the second set of diffractive elements is configured to diffract the light for display.

An optical notch filter includes a particle layer including nano-particles in a substrate material. The nano-particles are arranged in one or more arrays to provide a nano plasmonic absorption of radiation having a wavelength of 532 nm incident on the filter. The filter exhibits a radiation absorption profile with an absorption maxima of at least 99% at 532 nm for an angle of incidence of between +50&#xb0; and &#x2212;50&#xb0;, and has a full width half maxima transmission of less than 15 nm.

A binocular display vergence correction system is described. The binocular display vergence correction system includes a binocular display, a display tracking system, and a controller. The binocular display, being pixelated, includes a left eye image display and a right eye image display. The display tracking system is configured to determine the position and angular orientation of the binocular display relative to an origin position and origin angular orientation. The controller, includes a processor, and is configured to correct the vergence of the binocular display based on an apparent viewing distance from an eye position of the binocular display to a target object to be viewed on a screen based on the determined position and angular orientation of the binocular display. A method of correcting vergence for a pixelated binocular display is also described.
