An optical system for a multi-color, multi-emitter LED-based lighting device can include a lens array. The lens array can include a number of color-mixing rod members extending parallel to each other along an optical axis, the color-mixing rod members being arranged and spaced so that the rear end of each color-mixing rod member aligns with a different one of the emitters. A beam-forming section can be formed at the front ends of the color mixing rod members. The beam-forming section can include nonplanar (e.g., convex or concave) front surface features, each nonplanar front surface feature being aligned with a front end of a corresponding one of the color-mixing rod members. The beam-forming section and color-mixing rod members can be formed as a unitary structure.

Optical system for multi-emitter LED-based lighting devices

A lens system includes a TIR (Total Internal Reflection) lens and a diffuser. The lens has an optical body member including an upper end, a lower end opposite the upper end, and an outer surface. The outer surface is shaped to provide total internal reflection for light from a light source. An upper surface extends in a series of steps from the upper end to a first interior portion of the optical body member. A substantially cylindrical cavity extends from the lower end to a second interior portion of the optical body member. A middle portion separates the first and second interior portions and has a flat upper surface and a curved lower surface. The diffuser has a curved shell configured for disposing over a light source and configured to fit inside the cylindrical cavity of the optical body member, the diffuser having a circular rim fused to the lower end of the optical body member.

Hybrid lens system incorporating total internal reflection lens and diffuser

An LED-based lamp can be made to have a form factor compatible with fixtures designed for MR16 lamps. Such a lamp can have a housing that provides an external electrical connection. Inside the housing is disposed a single emitter structure having a substrate with multiple light-emitting diodes (LEDs) arranged thereon. Different LEDs produce light of different colors (or color temperatures). For example, at least one LED can produce a warm white light, while at least one other LED produces a cool white light and at least one other LED produces a red light. A total-internal-reflection (TIR) lens is positioned to collect light emitted from the single emitter structure and adapted to mix the light from the LEDs to produce a uniform white light. A diffusive coating is applied to a front face of the TIR lens for further color mixing.

LED-based MR16 replacement lamp

A lamp includes a single emitter structure having a substrate with 25 or more light emitting diodes (LEDs) arranged thereon and a power rating of 80 Watts or more, a total internal reflection (TIR) lens with a plurality of refractive surface regions disposed on the step-shaped upper surface of the optical body, and a holder having a plurality of tabs disposed along an inside rim of the holder and configured for radial compression fit with a flange of the lens, and three or more support members configured for centering the optical body member with respect to the single emitter structure.

Spot TIR lens system for small high-power emitter

An LED light emitter includes a single emitter structure having a substrate with a plurality of light emitting diodes (LEDs) arranged thereon, wherein the plurality of LEDs includes at least one first LED die that produces a first color light, and at least one second LED die that produces a second color light. The LED light emitter also includes a total internal reflection (TIR) lens positioned to collect light emitted from the single emitter structure and adapted to mix the light from the plurality of LEDs to produce a uniform light. The plurality of LEDs are selected such that the light output by the LED light emitter has a desired color temperature when an equal current is supplied to all of the plurality of LEDs.

System and methods for warm white LED light source

An LED (light-emitting diode) high-power wide-angle A-19 lamp needs only a single LED emitter having multiple LEDs. The LED A-19 lamp includes a lamp envelop structure configured for transmission of light therethrough and a base structure coupled to a lower portion of the lamp envelop structure for coupling to an external power source. The dimensions of the lamp envelop structure and the base structure conform to requirement of a conventional A-19 lamp. The LED emitter includes a plurality of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) disposed in a single recess in a substrate and a single lens disposed over the LEDs and the substrate. In a specific embodiment, the emitter is configured to consume electrical power of 30 Watts or higher and to provide light distribution at 130 degrees or wider at 50% peak intensity without additional secondary optical components.

Multiple-LED emitter for A-19 lamps

A lamp includes a single emitter structure having a substrate with 25 or more light emitting diodes (LEDs) arranged thereon and a power rating of 80 Watts or more, a total internal reflection (TIR) lens with a plurality of refractive surface regions disposed on the step-shaped upper surface of the optical body, and a holder having a plurality of tabs disposed along an inside rim of the holder and configured for radial compression fit with a flange of the lens, and three or more support members configured for centering the optical body member with respect to the single emitter structure. A low weight ratio of hardener over base resin below 6 is used, for example, between 1.5:1 to 2.5:1.

Zoom lens systems for LED-based spotlights include a base lens and a disk lens. The base lens can be a TIR lens with convex microlenses on a front surface. The disk lens can be generally planar. A rear surface of the disk lens can have concave microlenses complementary to the microlenses on the front surface of the base lens. A front surface of the disk lens can have convex microlenses with a different geometry from the microlenses on the front surface of the base lens. The disk lens can be movable relative to the base lens from a narrow-angle position in which a rear surface of the disk lens is in contact with a front surface of the base lens to a wide-angle position in which the rear surface of the disk lens is separated from the front surface of the base lens.

Zoom lens system for LED-based spotlight

A total-internal-reflection (TIR) lens for color mixing includes a body member having an outer surface and an interior open channel extending longitudinally through the body member. The body member and the interior open channel are substantially symmetric with respect to an optical axis, and the outer surface is shaped to provide total internal reflection. The body member has a first end surface region at a first end of the open channel for accommodating a light source and a second end surface region opposite the first end region. The second end surface region includes a plurality of refractive surface regions positioned around the second end region of the open channel. The lens is configured to provide projected light substantially centered with respect to the optical axis when the light source is positioned off the optical axis. In a specific embodiment, a lighting apparatus for providing centered white light includes such a lens and a plurality of light sources.

Total internal reflection lens for color mixing

A total internal reflection (TIR) lens has an integrated lamp cover adapted to a lamp of a desired form factor (e.g., PAR-38). The size and shape of the TIR lens can be adapted to optimize the light output of the lamp with little regard to the desired form factor. The integrated lamp cover can extend the front surface of the TIR lens in a direction transverse from the optical axis.

A lens has an optical body member with a first end, a second end, and an outer surface, the outer surface being shaped to provide total internal reflection. The optical body member further has an interior open channel extending longitudinally from the first end to the second end thereof. The optical body member further has a plurality of refractive surface regions disposed in the second end thereof and around the second opening of the interior open channel. The optical body member also has a plurality of protrusions extending from the first end of the optical body member. The protrusions are disposed circumferentially around the first opening of the interior open channel and are arranged to center the optical body member and to maintain the optical body member at a predetermined position with respect to the light source. In a light apparatus having an LED emitter disposed on a substrate, the protrusions can fit into notches in the substrate.

Total internal reflection lens with pedestals for LED emitter

A lighting apparatus includes a light source having a plurality of light-emitting-diodes and a lens assembly with a lens and a lens holder. The lens includes a body member having an outer surface shaped to provide total internal reflection and an interior open channel extending longitudinally through the body member. The body member has a first end region for accommodating the light source and a second end region that includes a plurality of refractive surface regions positioned around the open channel. The lens holder has a concave interior surface shaped to accommodate the optical body member of the lens and a convex exterior surface. The holder has multiple clips for securing the lens and three or more support members extending from the exterior surface toward the first end.

Lighting apparatus with total internal reflection lens and mechanical retention and locating device

A lens assembly has a lens and a holder. The lens has an optical body member having a first end, a second end, and an outer surface. The outer surface is shaped to provide total internal reflection. The optical body member also has an interior open channel extending longitudinally from the first end to the second end thereof. The second end includes a peripheral flange that is free of curved refractive surface regions and has one or more index regions and one or more notches formed therein. The holder is a substantially cylindrical support member having a hollow interior region shaped to accommodate the optical body member. The holder also has a top rim region having one or more slots for receiving the index regions of the optical body member and one or more snap clips for fitting to the notches of the peripheral flange region of the optical body member.

Total internal reflection lens and lens holder

A lens assembly includes a total internal reflection lens and a lens holder. The lens includes a body member having an outer surface shaped to provide total internal reflection and an interior open channel extending longitudinally through the body member. The body member has a first end region for accommodating a light source and a second end region that includes a plurality of refractive surface regions positioned around the open channel. The lens holder has a concave interior surface shaped to accommodate the optical body member of the lens and a convex exterior surface. The holder has multiple clips for securing the lens. The holder also has three or more support members extending from the exterior surface toward the first end. The support members are adapted for centering the optical body member with respect to the light source and maintaining the light source in the specified position in relation to the optical body member.

Total internal reflection lens and mechanical retention and locating device

A modified concentric spectrograph for diffracting light with high stray light rejection without astigmatism is provided. The modified spectrograph includes a grating, a lens, and at least one entrance port and one exit port. The grating has a concave surface and a meridian plane with a first side and a second side. The lens has a substantially planar surface and a convex surface. Preferably, the convex and concave surfaces are substantially concentric. The ports are substantially located on different sides of the meridian plane near a focal plane of the spectrograph. The position of a focal plane may be modified using an optically transmissive triangular prism with a reflective surface, and an optically transmissive block. The position of a focal plane may further be modified with one or more optically transmissive plates. Methods for using the spectrograph are also provided.
