A method for performing a physical operation on a geologic formation includes: receiving image data of the formation obtained by an imaging tool disposed in a borehole penetrating the formation, the image data having images of fractures intersecting a wall of the borehole to provide borehole fracture data; simulating multiple fracture scenarios of the fractures intersecting the wall of the borehole with each scenario based on keeping the borehole fracture data constant to provide a plurality of simulations, each fracture scenario varying at least one of fracture dimensions, fracture shape, and fracture placement with respect to the borehole; determining a property from each simulation; calculating the property for the plurality of simulations at a selected statistical level, wherein the receiving, simulating, determining, and calculating are performed using a processor; and performing the physical operation on the geologic formation using physical operation apparatus based on the calculated property.

Near wellbore discrete fracture networks

An embodiment of a method for evaluating a schedule for removing a core sample includes generating a model of the core by applying a value of each of the input parameters, one or more of the input parameter values associated with an uncertainty range, and defining a proposed tripping schedule, and performing an evaluation including applying the proposed tripping schedule and a set of expected input parameter values to the model, estimating a core parameter and determining whether the tripping schedule is predicted to be successful by comparing the core parameter to selected core damage criteria. The method also includes iteratively repeating the evaluation, each evaluation being performed using a different combination of input parameter values than any other evaluation, and calculating a probability of success (POS) of the proposed tripping schedule based on a number of evaluations that result in the tripping schedule being predicted to be successful.

Estimation of optimum tripping schedules

A method for estimating a property of an earth formation includes: obtaining a sample of rock; scanning the sample to determine internal rock damage; measuring a deformation parameter of the sample; constructing a mathematical model of the sample that replicates the determined and measured internal rock damage distribution; simulating the one or more tests using the mathematical model; obtaining a rock deformation parameter using the one or more simulated tests corresponding to the measured rock deformation parameter; comparing the rock deformation parameter obtained from the one or more simulated tests to the corresponding measured rock deformation parameter; adjusting parameters of the mathematical model based upon the rock parameter obtained from simulation not being within a selected range of the measured rock parameter; and providing the mathematical model as a verified mathematical model based upon the rock parameter obtained from simulation being within a selected range of the measured rock parameter.

Obtaining micro- and macro-rock properties with a calibrated rock deformation simulation

A method for conducting an earth reservoir process includes receiving a stress field of a reservoir that includes a pore pressure field for a rock volume, selecting a search radius extending from a grid cell of interest, and substituting a pore pressure from a plurality of surrounding grid cells within the selected radius for the pore pressure of the grid cell of interest and determining if a critical stress state exists for each of the substituted pore pressures. The method further includes determining a shortest distance to a grid cell in the plurality of surrounding grid cells having a pore pressure that yields a critical stress state when substituted in the grid cell of interest and conducting the earth reservoir process with earth reservoir process apparatus using a parameter related to the determined shortest distance.

Formation fracturing potential using surrounding pore pressures

A method and computer-readable medium for establishing an uncertainty for obtained values of a one-dimensional logging parameter mapped to a three-dimensional volume is disclosed. A relation is formed between the obtained values of the logging parameter and a volumetric parameter of the three-dimensional volume. A set of representative data points is obtained that relates the obtained values of the logging parameter to the volumetric parameter by binning the obtained values. A plurality of regression curves are then determined, wherein each regression curve is obtained by adding a random error to the set of representative data points to obtain a set of randomized data points and performing a regression analysis using the set of randomized data points. The plurality of regression curves are used to establish the uncertainty for the values of the logging parameter in the three-dimensional volume.

Use of monte carlo simulations for establishing correlations and their uncertainties

A method of estimating stress in an earth formation is disclosed. The method includes: dividing a domain including at least a portion of an earth formation into a first region and a second region; estimating a first vertical stress in the first region and representing the first vertical stress as at least one point load; estimating a second vertical stress in the second region by a point load based method using the first vertical stress; and estimating at least one horizontal stress based on the second vertical stress.

Apparatus and method for predicting vertical stress fields

An embodiment of a method for constructing a fracture network includes: receiving seismic data collected from a stimulation operation in an earth formation, the seismic data including seismic event data including a first seismic event associated with a first time increment and a second seismic event associated with a subsequent second time increment; and constructing a fracture network model. The model is constructed by: constructing an initial portion of the model based on the first seismic event; and subsequently updating the initial portion of the model based on the second seismic event.

Generation of fracture networks using seismic data

A method for removing a core sample from a borehole includes: taking the core sample within the borehole with a sampling tool; generating a model of the core sample, the model based on data representing properties of the core sample; defining a plurality of proposed tripping schedules; applying, by a processor, the plurality of proposed tripping schedules to the model, and estimating a core parameter for each of the plurality of proposed tripping schedules; comparing the core parameter to a criteria; and selecting a suitable tripping schedule based on the comparison.

A method of estimating at least one of stress and pore fluid pressure in an earth formation is disclosed. The method includes: discretizing a domain including at least a portion of the earth formation into a plurality of cells, each cell including a respective density value; dividing the domain into a first region and a second region, the first region including a surface of the earth formation; vertically integrating the respective density values in the first region; and estimating the total vertical stress for each cell in the first region and the second region by estimating a point load based on the respective density value.
