A plasma display panel (PDP) and a method of manufacturing the same, the PDP including scan electrodes extending parallel to one another, sustain electrodes extending parallel to the scan electrodes, and address electrodes extending across the sustain electrodes and the scan electrodes. The address electrodes are divided into a first address electrode group extending from a first side of the panel, and a second address electrode group extending from an opposing second side of the panel, such that the first and second groups are disposed on different sides of the PDP.

A driving method of a plasma display device according to an exemplary embodiment groups a plurality of address electrodes extending in a first direction into a plurality of groups, and logically divides each of the groups into a plurality of sub-groups. A plasma display panel (PDP) driving method and a PDP gray-representing method for improving representation performance of low gray scales is disclosed. A voltage rising from a low level voltage to a reset voltage of a reset period of a subsequent subfield is applied to a scan electrode, without having a sustain period, after performing an address operation of the subfield with the minimum weight. The discharge cell selected in the address period of the minimum weight is discharged in an initial part of the gradually rising voltage.

A plasma display device includes a plasma display panel (PDP) and a driving method for driving the PDP. The PDP includes discharge cells that are formed by scan electrodes, sustain electrodes, and address electrodes. The driving method divides a frame of the plasma display panel into a plurality of subfields having respective weights in which gray scales are represented by a combination of the subfields. The plurality of subfields are divided into a first group and a second group. In an address period of a subfield of the first having a lowest weight subfield of the plurality of subfields, the method applies a scan voltage and an address voltage respectively to the scan electrode and the address electrode of a discharge cell to be selected from the discharge cells. The scan voltage is applied to the scan electrode and the scan electrode is floated.

An initialization and driving method for a plasma display panel. When the plasma display panel is turned on, a voltage at a first electrode is increased from a first voltage to a second voltage, and a voltage at a second electrode is reduced from a fourth voltage to the fifth voltage for the purpose of forming wall charges in cells while a third voltage is applied to the second electrode. A voltage is applied to the first electrode and the second electrode to establish a difference between the first electrode and the second electrode to be alternately a sixth voltage and a negative voltage of the sixth voltage, and therefore the cell is discharged.

Plasma display panel initialization and driving method and apparatus

Disclosed are a driving device and a driving method for a plasma display panel (PDP). A panel capacitor is formed by a scan electrode and a sustain electrode. The charges are moved from the panel capacitor to a capacitor by turning on a transistor which is connected between the scan electrode and the capacitor. By this method, the voltage of the panel capacitor is steeply reduced so that a discharge is generated in the panel capacitor. When the voltage of the capacitor increases because of the charges moved from the panel capacitor, the gate-source voltage of the transistor is reduced. As a result, the transistor is turned off so that the scan electrode is floated. Accordingly, the discharge is steeply quenched so that the wall charges are precisely controlled. After the capacitor is discharged, the above-noted operation may be repeated.

A plasma display includes a plurality of scan electrodes. A scan voltage is sequentially supplied to the plurality of scan electrodes, and a non-scan voltage that is higher than the scan voltage is supplied to scan electrodes to which the scan voltage is supplied. The non-scan voltage is generated by dividing a voltage that is higher than the non-scan voltage and the scan voltage. Thus, a voltage source for supplying the non-scan voltage can be eliminated.

A driving apparatus of a plasma display panel for applying a rising or falling waveform to a panel capacitor, comprising a transistor for forming a current path between a power source and the panel capacitor while the transistor is turned on, and which is coupled between the power source and one end of the panel capacitor. A sustain or scan electrode driver for a plasma display device including a power recovery circuit, a voltage storage circuit, and a switching circuit. Power recovery is achieved by a coupling a power source at a minus sustain voltage to the sustain or scan electrode driver circuit that includes a capacitor and an inductor for creating resonance with the panel capacitor and recovering the power used in sustain discharge. Power loss of switches used in the driver circuit may be reduced and power recovery efficiency may be increased by using an additional capacitor in the driver circuit that maintains terminals of the switch at a predetermined level.

Plasma display device and driving apparatus thereof

A method for driving a display panel to produce an efficient sustain discharge is provided. In one embodiment, the display panel includes a plurality of scanning electrodes that are driven by a sustain discharge signal. A corresponding plurality of common electrode groups is driven individually by different sustain discharge signals. Sustain discharge is performed by alternately applying high level sustain pulses to each the plurality of scanning electrodes and each the plurality of common electrode groups. Sustain pulses with a high level are applied sequentially to each the plurality of common electrode groups in time intervals between the sustain pulses with the high level applied to the plurality of scanning electrodes. Therefore, it is possible to maintain a duty rate of a sustain discharge signal near 50% while reducing a peak value of currents generated upon sustain discharge driving, thereby achieving stable sustain discharge.

Panel driving method for sustain period and display panel using the same

In a driving method of a plasma display device, a final voltage of a falling ramp voltage is set to a discharge firing voltage of all the discharge cells after applying a gradually rising ramp voltage during a reset period. A difference in voltage applied to an address electrode and to a scan electrode is set to be greater than the maximum discharge firing voltage in turn-on discharge cells in an address period. A bias voltage applied in a rising reset period, an address period, and a sustain period of subfields that express low grayscales is increased, and the address electrode is biased with a positive voltage in the sustain period. With this configuration, the problem of worsening the margins by loss of wall charges is solved since addressing is not influenced by the wall charges and performance of expressing low grayscales is increased.

A method for dividing a frame into a plurality of subfields, and driving them on a plasma display panel having a plurality of first electrodes and second electrodes formed in parallel on a first substrate, and a plurality of third electrodes formed on a second substrate and extending over the first and second electrodes. A first voltage and a second voltage are applied to the first electrode and the second electrode of the discharge cell to be selected from among the discharge cells during an address period of a first subfield with the minimum weight from among the subfields, such that the difference between the first voltage and the second voltage is less than a discharge firing voltage.
