An image display method of improving brightness of an output image in an image display device using a sequential driving method and a plurality of single-color light sources. The image display method includes extracting a white color component from the primary color image signals, calculating a period to display the white color component, converting the primary color image signals into shortened primary color image signals and a white color image signal based on the period to display the white color component, and driving the single-color light sources together during a period to display the white color image signal and sequentially driving the single-color light sources during a period to display the shortened primary color image signals. The brightness of output images is improved by displaying the white color image signal by simultaneously driving the single-color light sources based on a ratio of a lowest gradient to a highest gradient of the primary color signals.

An illuminating unit having a plurality of light emitting devices and collimators and a projection type image display apparatus using the same are provided. The illuminating unit includes: a plurality of light emitting devices which output light beams of predetermined wavelengths; a plurality of collimators, each having a parabolic reflection surface for reflecting the light beam in a predetermined direction, a mounting section for locating the light emitting device at the focal point of the parabolic reflection surface, a light output surface opposite to the parabolic reflection surface, and a light guide section for guiding the light beam reflected from the parabolic reflection surface to the light output surface; and one or more fixing members having two or more steps for mounting the light emitting devices and the collimators on their top surface. A plurality of light emitting devices and collimators are efficiently arranged in a small space. Therefore, thermal concentration can be reduced and heat can be effectively discharged.

An illumination unit with an improved color synthesis prism, which can synthesize light beams emitted from compact light sources, and a projection type image display apparatus employing the illumination unit. The illumination unit includes first, second, and third light source units to emit first, second, and third light beams of different wavelength bands, a first triangular prism including a first entrance surface through which the first beam emitted from the first light source unit is incident, a first exit/reflection surface inclined with respect to the first entrance surface, and a second entrance surface on which the first light beam reflected by the first exit/reflection surface and the second light beam emitted from the second light source unit are incident, a second triangular prism including a third entrance surface through which the third light beam emitted from the third light source unit is incident, a second exit/reflection surface inclined with respect to the third entrance surface, and a fourth entrance surface facing the first exit/reflection surface and spaced a predetermined distance from the first exit/reflection surface, a first color filter formed on the second entrance surface to reflect the first light beam incident from the first exit/reflection surface and to transmit the second light beam such that the first and second light beams are directed toward the first exit/reflection surface, and a second color filter formed on the fourth entrance surface to reflect the third light beam incident from the second exit/reflection surface and to transmit the first and second light beams transmitted from the first exit/reflection surface such that the first, second, and third light beams are directed toward the second exit/reflection surface.

An illuminator includes a concave mirror to reflect incident light in a predetermined direction, an inner reflective mirror provided on an optical axis of the concave mirror and having a reflective surface at least one surface thereof, a light source installed on at least one surface of the inner reflective mirror to generate and illuminate light, and a retro-reflective mirror provided at a focal point of the light reflected from the concave mirror, or in a vicinity of the focal point, and having an aperture through which some of the light illuminated from the light source and reflected by the concave mirror passes and a retro-reflective surface to reflect remaining light not passing through the aperture back toward the concave mirror.

Illuminator

A projection display including first through third light source units to radiate first through third light beams having different colors, respectively, a light path combining unit to combine paths of the first through third light beams, an optical modulator to sequentially modulate the first through third light beams according to image information, and a projection lens unit to magnify and project the modulated light beams onto a screen. The light path combining unit includes first and second prisms. The first prism includes first and second incidence surfaces, through which the first and second light beams are incident, respectively, a first emission surface, and a first selective reflection surface to transmit the second light beam toward the first emission surface. The second prism includes a third incidence surface, through which the third light beam is incident, a fourth incidence surface, through which the first and second light beams emitted through the first emission surface are incident, a second emission surface, and a second selective reflection surface to reflect the third light beam and to transmit the first and second light beams toward the second emission surface.

Projection display

A projection display includes first through third light source units to radiate first through third light beams, respectively, having different colors, an X-cube prism to combine paths of the first through third light beams, an optical modulator to sequentially modulate the first through third light beams according to image information, and a projection lens unit to magnify and project the modulated light beams onto a screen. Each of the first through third light source units includes at least one optical module. The optical module includes a collimator having a first reflective surface in a parabolic shape, and a compact light source located in the vicinity of a focal point of the first reflective surface.

A color prism capable of separating incident light into four color beams and synthesizing incident four-color beams, and a projection-type image display apparatus employing the color prism. The color prism includes: first through third triangular prisms each having two boundary surfaces which face the other two triangular prisms, and an outer surface which transmits or reflects incident light according to an incidence angle of the light; and first through third dichroic filters respectively interposed among the first through third triangular prisms and selectively transmits or reflects incident light according to wavelength so as to separate incident light into first through fourth light beams according to wavelength ranges and synthesize incident first through fourth light beams. The projection-type image display apparatus includes: a light source emitting light; a polarization beam splitter to transmit or reflect incident light according to a polarization direction; the color prism; first through fourth image forming devices disposed to face the outer surfaces of the first through third triangular prisms, and selectively modulates incident first through fourth light beams by pixels to form images and reflects the formed images to the color prism; and a projection lens unit to enlarge and project an incident image formed by the first through fourth image forming devices and synthesized by the color prism onto a screen.
