Above a workpiece-receiving plate for an lower workpiece, a folding device for an automatic sewing machine comprises two swords, namely a lower sword and an upper sword for receiving an intermediate workpiece and an upper workpiece, respectively. For the folding of the intermediate workpiece about the outer edges of the lower sword, folding modules are mounted on the underside of an outer frame. For the folding of the upper workpiece about the outer edges of the upper sword, folding modules are provided on the upper side of the outer frame. The swords are mounted on a common carriage and movable in height relative to each other. The carriage iself is likewise displaceable in height.

For the purpose of attaching a strip of cloth provided with a zip-fastener component to a trouser forepart, first a rim of the strip of cloth and then the rim of the trouser forepart are folded over. The strip of cloth is arranged above the trouser forepart. Both folded-over rims are brought into a position relative to each other which they occupy after being joined together. Then they are brought into mutual contact and joined together with only a single seam in only one sewing operation. Thus very simple handling of the parts to be sewn together is achieved along with a very simple design of the required sewing units.

A folding device for an automatic sewing machine has a carrier plate for a first workpiece, a sword which is movable in the longitudinal direction thereof to receive a second workpiece and an outer frame having creasing devices for folding the second workpiece around the sword. The outer frame is pivotable into a total of three different working positions. In addition, it is movable out of its working positions into a retracted position. The purpose of this measure is to improve the field of vision for the operator while at the same time reducing the risk of an accident.

An automatic sewing machine has two feeding devices, each having a workpiece holder, each of which, when in a sewing position, can be raised up into a position some distance above a carrier plate and, at this distance above the carrier plate, can be moved over the other workpiece holder situated on the carrier plate to a transfer position. The purpose of these measures is to minimize the cycle time with the lowest possible expense and to increase the output of the automatic sewing machine as much as possible while largely avoiding idling paths.

A folding device for an automatic sewing machine has a vacuum holding device for a sword. This measure serves to ensure a perfect position of the sword relative to an outer frame of the folding device during creasing of a workpiece. A suction plate provided for this purpose is pivotable relative to the outer frame in a direction away from the sword. This serves to allow very precise creasing to take place.

An automatic sewing machine for successively sewing workpieces, which, in particular, are flexibly connected to one another by at least one thread chain, is provided with a reel subsequently arranged to a sewing head for receiving sewn workpieces on its substantially cylindrical core. In order to render possible a trouble-free feeding, initial catching and winding of the workpieces, a lower winder support is positioned in front of the reel for feeding and guiding the workpieces to the core of the reel. Moreover, there may be provided an upper winder support which is lowerable towards the core and which at least partially encases the latter at a side opposite the lower winder support.
