A hearing aid has an embedded Internet interface so that the hearing aid can automatically communicate error diagnosis data to a hearing aid acoustician via the Internet so that the hearing aid user need not visit the hearing aid acoustician and so that acoustician can initiate appropriate maintenance, training or repair measures. An appertaining method is also provided.

For the automatic choice of a hearing program, a hearing aid () detects whether it is located in the immediate vicinity of an external transmitter ('). The transmitter (&#x2032;) generates a transmitter-specific signal so that an assignment of different transmitters can be made. In addition, in the case of the hearing aid (), the current time of day and the day of the week can also influence the choice of the active hearing program.

Using a single signaling line, clock pulses that are variably formed for data transmission, are applied at the signaling line, and the digital information is recovered at the service device side by means of clock pulse variation and is subsequently processed with the transmitted clock pulse. A hearing device has a microphone, a signal processor, an earphone and a number of externally accessible final control elements for setting audiological/acoustical parameters of the signal processor. An interface for serial data transmission between a hearing aid and a control device has a first data terminal for bi-directional data transmission to and from the hearing aid, a second data terminal for receiving a data format containing a start bit from the control device, and a third data terminal for data to be received by the control device, plus at least one coupler for data transmission from the second terminal to the first data terminal and at least one coupler for data transmission from the first data terminal to the third data terminal. The two couplers have an interactive (shared) connection which is normally placed at a first logic level, but which can be modified to a second logic level by signals either from the control device or from the hearing aid. For a simplified construction of a hearing aid device with respect to switch, control and regulating elements, one or more pressure or pressure and position sensors, which are constructed in a film-like structure to react with variable resistance, are composed of laminated polymer layers wherein one layer is coated with interdigital electrodes and the appertaining other layer is coated with semiconductor material. The sensor elements are arranged on either the outside or inside of the housing or can be arranged on a structural member, such as a carrier situated within the housing. The sensor or sensor elements, respectively, can be fashioned as part of the switches or as regulators for the operation of the device.

Digitally programmable, single-channel and multi-channel hearing aids of various manufacturers and/or hearing aids having different acoustic characteristics can be set and adjusted with the programming device of the invention. The programming device includes a microcontroller, main memories, interchangeable company program modules with plug-in locations, and a master program module with corresponding plug location. A display is also provided for the programming device.
