A thermally stable phosphor made of the M-Si&#x2014;O&#x2014;N system, having a cation M and an activator D, M being represented by Ba or Sr alone or as a mixture and optionally also being combined with at least one other element from the group Ca, Mg, Zn, Cu. The phosphor is activated with Eu or Ce or Tb alone or as a mixture, optionally in codoping with Mn or Yb. The activator D partially replaces the cation M. The phosphor is produced from the charge stoichiometry MO&#x2014;SiO&#x2014;SiNwith an increased oxygen content relative to the known phosphor MSiON:D, where MO is an oxidic compound.

Disclosed is a luminescent substance which has the structure EA3N2Si2O4:D, wherein EA=(Sr,Ba,Ca) and D=Eu, provides red emission, and is characterized by great stability and a simple production process. Said luminescent substance can be used for many different types of light sources.
