If only the absorption distribution of a part, for example, a separate organ, of a body slice to be examined is desirable, the radiation dose administered to the body can be limited. The part is irradiated with the full intensity only during a first measuring cycle. In order to avoid reconstruction errors, the entire body slice is irradiated with a second intensity during a second measuring cycle which is substantially lower than the first intensity. Thus, along each measuring path through the part of the slice there are available two absorption values wherefrom suitable correction factors can be determined for correction of all second absorption values which subsequently no longer exhibit any deviations, or only small deviations, with respect to the first absorption values, so that they do not introduce artefacts during the reconstruction.

In fan beam X-ray scanners operating with a large number of detectors, errors at and near the center of rotation are caused by the fact that the radiation absorption in said area is substantially always measured by the same detectors and that the sensitivity of all detectors is not exactly the same. The invention provides an improvement in that the measurement is carried out with a larger number of detectors than is necessary for the measurement of the scanning field and that the detectors pivot during the measurement. As a result, the absorption in the center of rotation is measured by different detectors so that, for a sufficient number of detectors the different sensitivities, errors are averaged and thus reduced or cancelled.

Method of and device for determining the distribution of radiation

When only a part of a body slice to be examined, for example, a separate organ, is irradiated by means of a fan-shaped radiation beam during computer tomography, it is necessary to know the body contour in order to enable reconstruction. The body contour can be determined by means of radiation scattered in the body. The scattered radiation is measured, in a direction which deviates from the direction of the X-rays of the fan-shaped beam, along scattered radiation paths which do not intersect each other in the positioning zone. On the basis of the detected scattered radiation, the scattered radiation path which is situated most far from the center of the examination zone is selected, after which the position of the scattered radiation path within the fan-shaped radiation beam, and hence within the positioning zone, is recorded. After the recording of all scattered radiation paths for the different directions of the fan-shaped radiation beam, the contour of the body slice to be examined is determined from the recorded positions of the scattered radiation paths.

Devices that measure the electron density in a body by means of radiation scattered from a narrow pencil beam of penetrating radiation directed through the body, produce defective images on reconstruction of the density distribution because of multiple scattering of radiation. This can of course be reduced by scattered ray diaphragms, but cannot be eliminated entirely. The invention therefore provides a means for detecting the size of the multiple scattered radiation component be measurement. For this purpose, the detector array which measures radiation including the single scattered radiation, is screened, at least osscasionally, from the single scattered radiation and the detected intensity values measured by the detector elements when so screened, are used to correct the values generated by measuring the detected radiation including the single scattered radiation.
