Process for mass coloring thermoplastic plastics

For coloring in the mass and spin dyeing water-insoluble thermoplastic polymers and polycondensates, especially polyesters, nickel complex disazomethine compounds are used consisting of 2 molecules of 2-hydroxy-naphthaldehyde possibly substituted in 6-position by halogen, cyano, carboxy, a carboxylic acid alkyl ester or an optionally substituted carboxylic acid amide group, and 1 molecule of an o-phenylene diamine possibly substituted in 4 and 5-position by non-ionic substituents, the nickel atoms being bound in complex manner to the nitrogen atoms of the phenylene diamine and the oxyen atoms of the hydroxynaphthaldehyde. Disazomethine compounds in which the phenylene diamine radical is unsubstituted if the hydroxynaphthaldehyde radical is not substituted in 6-position are excluded. The coloring compounds can be added to the polymeric material without previous dispersion. They dissolved in said material in molecular disperse form so that generally brilliant and clear colorations are obtained. In spin dyeing the filaments substantially retain their high strength and drawing properties; abrasion and clogging of the nozzles or filters do not occur. The colorations are distinguished by a high color strength as well as by high fastnesses to light and to weather and by a good stability in thermofixation.

Process for the coloration of thermoplastic polymers and polycondensates

For coloring in the mass and spin dyeing water-insoluble thermoplastic polymers and polycondensates, especially polyesters, nickel complex disazomethine compounds are used having the general formula (1) ##STR1## in which A and B have the same meaning or are different from each other and each is an isocyclic or heterocyclic residue. The coloring compounds can be added to the polymeric material without previous dispersion. They are dissolved in said material in molecular disperse form so that generally brilliant and clear colorations are obtained. In spin dyeing the filaments substantially retain their high strength and drawing properties; abrasion and clogging of the nozzles or filters do not occur. The colorations are distinguished by a high color strength as well as by high fastnesses to light and to weather and by a good stability in thermofixation.

Preparations of insoluble colorants, especially pigments, are obtained by distributing the colorant in molten polypropylene wax having a viscosity of 0.5 to 5 Pa.s, determined at 170.degree. C., and an isotactic proportion of 40 to 90% by weight. These preparations are easily dispersible in polyolefins and especially useful for dyeing polypropylene in the mass.

Process for the dyeing of a water-insoluble thermoplastic polymer or polycondensate in mass, which comprises adding to the said thermoplastic material before the final molding thereof an azlactone dyestuff of the formula (1) ##STR1## in which A and B each represents naphthyl, phenyl, chlorophenyl, bromophenyl, lower alkyl-phenyl, lower alkoxyphenyl, nitrophenyl, ##STR2## CYANOPHENYL, DICHLOROPHENYL, CHLORO-LOWER ALKYL-PHENYL, NITRO-LOWER ALKYL-PHENYL, CHLORO-NITROPHENYL, A and B being identical or different, D represents naphthylene, phenylene, monochlorophenylene, dichlorophenylene or di-lower alkoxyphenylene, or with a mixture of dyestuffs of the said formula (1), the dyeings so obtained representing brilliant yellow dyeings of high tinctorial strength being distinguished by very good fastness to light, rubbing and ironing and, particularly, an outstanding stability toward heat.

The novel improved process of the invention for spin-dyeing of acid-modified polymers or copolymers of acrylonitrile with basic dyestuffs wherein the spinning solutions of the polymers contain the basic dyestuffs in form of their free dyestuff bases as anhydro or carbinol bases is conducted with completely transparent spinning solutions avoiding clogging and mechanical abrasion of the spinning nozzles and yields filaments and fibers which do not show matting effects but have a high tinctorial strength and good and improved fastnesses to rubbing, to light and to wet-processing.

Process for the spin-dyeing of polymers or copolymers of acrylonitrile

A pigment composition for the dyeing of polyacrylonitrile polymers and copolymers prepared by adding a polyacrylonitrile polymer or copolymer as a support in the preparation of formation of the pigment and working up the pigment in usual manner. As support material there are suitable as well pure polyacrylonitrile as copolymers containing, in addition to acrylonitrile, one or more other copolymerizable monoolefinic monomers. The amount of support material to be added ranges from 20 to 80, preferably from 30 to 60% by weight, calculated on the finished composition. As pigments there may be used those which are prepared or formed in purely aqueous systems or in aqueous systems containing organic solvents, for example azo pigments or pigments of perylene tetracarboxylic acid or naphthalene tetracarboxylic acid, dioxazines, phthalocyanines, quinacridones, indigoids, anthraquinone dyestuffs, iron oxide and titanium dioxide. The pulverulent compositions thus obtained are especially suitable for the dyeing of spinning solutions of polyacrylonitrile fibers and the modifications thereof. They may be dispersed by simply stirring them into an appropriate spinning solvent.
