A method and a device for the parallel study of chemical reactions in at least two spatially separated reaction spaces is provided. A device for the parallel study of chemical reactions includes at least the following components: (a) at least two spatially separated reaction spaces; (b) on the reaction space input side, at least one common educt feed for the reaction spaces according to (a); (d) on the reaction space output side, at least one connection per reaction space to at least one holding gas feed common to all the reaction spaces, or subsets of them; (e) on the reaction space output side, and downstream of the connection to the holding gas feed according to (d) in the product flow direction, at least one restrictor per reaction space.

Device and method for pressure and flow control in parallel reactors

The present invention relates to an integrated system for the treatment of exhaust gases, which preferably consists of at least one NO-storing component, at least one in situ ammonia-generating component, at least one ammonia-storing component and at least one ammonia (NH)-SCR-component, as well as to a process for the treatment of exhaust gas comprising at least the steps (i) storing of NOunder lean exhaust gas conditions in at least one NO-storing component; (ii) in situ conversion of the stored NOto ammonia (NH) under rich exhaust gas conditions; (iii) storing of the ammonia (NH) in at least one NH-storing component under rich exhaust gas conditions as well as the (iv) reaction of NHwith NOunder lean exhaust gas conditions. Thereby, the partial steps 'storing of NO' and 'conversion of NHwith NO' are carried out at least partially and/or temporarily simultaneously and/or parallelly. Furthermore, preferred catalysts are disclosed for carrying out the process.

Process for the removal of harmful substances from exhaust gases of combustion engines and catalyst for carrying out said process

The present invention relates to a method and a device for the parallel study of chemical reactions in at least two spatially separated reaction spaces. In particular, the invention is suitable for reactions which are not constant volume reactions and/or for reactions in which fluid flows through at least two spatially separated reaction spaces are intended to be controlled together for all the reaction spaces, or for related subsets of them, in the most straightforward way possible. According to one embodiment, the device according to the invention for the parallel study of chemical reactions comprises at least the following components: (a) at least two spatially separated reaction spaces; (b) on the reaction space input side, at least one common educt feed for the reaction spaces according to (a); (d) on the reaction space output side, at least one connection per reaction space to at least one holding gas feed common to all the reaction spaces, or subsets of them; (e) on the reaction space output side, and downstream of the connection to the holding gas feed according to (d) in the product flow direction, at least one restrictor per reaction space.

A process and apparatus for testing material libraries, in particular catalysts, by means of coupled use of at least two analytical methods, preferably IR thermography and mass spectrometry. Owing to the selected arrangement, the disadvantages of the two previously known individual methods are compensated for: the subsequent selectivity determination for selected sections by means of mass spectrometry invalidates the argument against IR thermography, of only being able to determine activities; the rapid integrated determination of potentially 'good' materials via IR thermography prevents an excessive loss of time by needing to test all materials of a library successively with the mass spectrometer. The reactor design permits, firstly, the integral recording of the entire reactor through a window which is transparent for the corresponding method and, secondly, permits the simultaneous, automated application of a second analytical method (for example mass spectrometry) to selected materials of a material library, which have been rated as active by the optical method. In the case described, the optical method provides information on the material activity for a set problem, and the second analytical method determines the selectivity of the materials.

Process and apparatus for the combinatorial production and testing of catalyst material libraries by using at least two analytical methods

The present invention relates to an arrangement, in particular for the parallel testing of a plurality of building blocks of a material library for performance characteristics, in which the arrangement has a block containing at least one reaction module and at least two heating/cooling modules.

Computer-aided optimization of substance libraries

A catalyst for purifying exhaust gases of a diesel engine. The catalyst contains two functional layers superimposed on an inert supporting body, whereby the first layer, which is situated directly on the supporting body, has a nitrogen oxide storage function and the second layer, which is in direct contact with the exhaust gas, has a catalytic function. The second functional layer additionally has a hydrocarbon-storage function and its catalytic function is provided by catalytically active noble metals of the platinum group which are deposited in highly dispersed form on finely divided, acidic carrier materials. Nitrogen oxides in the oxygen-rich exhaust gas of a diesel engine can be converted with optimal utilization of the reductive constituents contained in the exhaust gas. For this purpose, no reducing agents going beyond the reductive components (carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons) which are contained as a consequence of incomplete combustion need to be added to the exhaust gas. Nevertheless, rates of conversion in respect of the nitrogen oxides are obtained, averaged over practical driving cycles, which lie distinctly above the rates of conversion of conventional reduction catalysts.

Catalyst for cleaning up the exhaust gases of a diesel engine

A catalyst for reducing nitrogen oxides in oxidizing and reducing atmospheres which contains iridium on a support material. Silicon dioxide or a dealuminized zeolite in the acid H form with a modulus of more than 20, preferably more than 100, or mixtures thereof are used as support materials. Iridium is deposited on the external surfaces of these support materials with average particle sizes between 10 and 30 nm. The catalyst is particularly suitable for treating exhaust gases from lean-burn gasoline engines or from diesel engines.

Catalyst for reducing nitrogen oxides in oxidizing and reducing atmospheres

A process for removing soot from the exhaust gas of a diesel engine by oxidizing the nitrogen monoxide present in the exhaust gas to nitrogen dioxide, separating the soot from the exhaust gas stream and oxidizing the soot using the nitrogen dioxide produced. The process is performed in at least two consecutive process stages and the soot is separated from the exhaust gas stream with an efficiency W between 0.05 and 0.95 in each process stage, wherein each process stage can be assigned a transmission for soot in accordance with T&equals;1&minus;W and the total transmission of the process for soot is given as the product of the transmissions of all the process stages.

Process and device for removing soot from the exhaust gas of a diesel engine

A nitrogen oxide storage catalyst which contains at least one catalyst material and at least one nitrogen oxide storage component from the group of alkali and alkaline earth metals. The nitrogen oxide storage component, after completing catalyst preparation, is present as finely divided barium sulfate, strontium sulfate, a mixture or mixed crystals of the two sulfates, or as their complete or incomplete decomposition product with an average particle size of less than 1 &mgr;m. Barium sulfate and/or strontium sulfate act as feed materials for the active storage component in the storage catalyst according to the invention. As a result of the reductive exhaust gas compositions occurring under normal automobile driving conditions barium sulfate and strontium sulfate decompose to compounds which are able to store nitrogen oxides. This compensates for the loss of active storage components which occurs due to aging. Barium sulfate and/or strontium sulfate may be decomposed during production by means of reductive calcination in order to obtain a high initial loading of the catalyst with storage compounds. In this case, these sulfates are used as auxiliary agents in order to introduce the highest possible concentrations of storage compounds into the storage catalyst.

Nitrogen oxide storage catalyst

A nitrogen oxide storage material is disclosed which contains at least one storage component for nitrogen oxides in the form of an oxide, mixed oxide, carbonate or hydroxide of the alkaline earth metals magnesium, calcium, strontium and barium and the alkali metals potassium and caesium on a high surface area support material. The support material can be doped cerium oxide, cerium/zirconium mixed oxide, calcium titanate, strontium titanate, barium titanate, barium stannate, barium zirconate, magnesium oxide, lanthanum oxide, praseodymium oxide, samarium oxide, neodymium oxide, yttrium oxide, zirconium silicate, yttrium barium cuprate, lead titanate, tin titanate, bismuth titanate, lanthanum cobaltate, lanthanum manganate and barium cuprate or mixtures thereof.

Nitrogen oxide storage material and nitrogen oxide storing catalyst prepared therefrom

A sulfur oxide storage material contains a magnesium-aluminum spinel (MgO.Al O ) and can be used as a so-called &ldquo;sulfur trap&rdquo; to remove sulfur oxides from oxygen-containing exhaust gases of industrial processes. In particular, it can be used for the catalytic purification of exhaust gas from internal-combustion engines to remove the sulfur oxides from the exhaust gas in order to protect the exhaust gas catalysts from sulfur poisoning. The material displays a molar ratio of magnesium oxide to aluminum oxide in the range of over 1.1:1, and the magnesium oxide present in stoichiometric excess is homogeneously distributed in a highly disperse form in the storage material.

Storage material for sulfur oxides

A process for reducing the nitrogen oxides content of the exhaust gas from an internal combustion engine includes treating the exhaust gas in an electric gas discharge such that at least one of nitrogen dioxide or nitric acid are formed from nitrogen oxides in the exhaust gas; storing the nitrogen dioxides and/or the nitric acid in the form of nitrates on a nitrogen oxides storage material during phases when the engine operates with a greater than a stoichiometric air/fuel ratio (i.e., the storage phase); decomposing the nitrates to give nitrogen oxides during brief phases when the engine operates with a less than the stoichiometric air/fuel ratio (i.e., the desorption phase); and reducing the nitrogen oxides which are released from the storage material to nitrogen. The nitrogen oxides storage material may be located in an electric gas discharge zone, and the exhaust gas may be passed through the discharge and then over the storage material.

Process for reducing the nitrogen oxides content of exhaust gas from an internal combustion engine

A process for evaluating performance deterioration of a nitrogen oxide storage catalyst which has a nitrogen oxide storage function and an oxygen storage function and is operated with cyclic alternation of the air/fuel ratio in the exhaust gas from lean to rich. The nitrogen oxides are stored during the lean phase and the nitrogen oxides are desorbed and converted during the rich phase. To check the serviceability of the storage catalyst, the air/fuel ratio of the exhaust gas is switched from lean to rich and the rich phase is extended beyond the time required for complete desorption of the nitrogen oxides until at least the rich exhaust gas passes right through the catalyst and the time interval &Dgr;t,produced between the first change-over until breakthrough of the rich exhaust gas and, after again switching from rich to lean running, the time interval &Dgr;t,produced between the second change-over and passage of oxygen through the catalyst are measured and the time differences &Dgr;t,and &Dgr;t,are used for separate assessment of the oxygen storage function and the nitrogen oxide storage function of the catalyst.
