Esterification products of monoalcohols and dicarboxylic acids, or of polyhydric alcohols and monocarboxylic acids respectively, containing 5 to 45% by weight of units of hydroxycarboxylic acids and having a ratio of carbon to oxygen atoms greater than 4.1 obtained from (a) aliphatic C.sub.1 -C.sub.14 alcohols, (b) aliphatic C.sub.4 -C.sub.18 carboxylic acids and optionally cycloaliphatic C.sub.6 -C.sub.12 and aromatic C.sub.7 -C.sub.12 carboxylic acids, and (c) lactones of aliphatic C.sub.5 -C.sub.12 hydroxycarboxylic acids. They are suitable for the preparation of lubricants and lubricant compositions.

Lactone-modified ester oils

A condensation product from aliphatic or cycloaliphatic polyols, aliphatic saturated or once unsaturated hydroxycarboxylic acids and aliphatic or cycloaliphatic saturated or unsaturated monocarboxylic acids is an effective lubricant for the working of metals, optionally in admixture with other lubricating oils and conventional additives.
