A device for encasing a rope-like strand containing one or more light waveguides, which device includes two extruders situated one after the other characterized by a fluid cooling device positioned between the two extruders for applying a cooling fluid to the external surface of a first layer applied by the first extruder to cool it prior to extruding a second layer thereon. The cooling device enables increasing the rate of travel of the rope-like strand during the extruding operation.

A pay-out stand for supply reels utilized in manufacturing cables particularly light waveguide cables having a basket-like structure mounted for rotation around a horizontal axis with carrier members extending parallel to the axis adjacent the periphery of the basket-like members. The supply reels are situated on the inside of each carrier part, preferably in pairs, and the carrier parts are spaced so that access of the supply reels can be had from the outside of the stand to enable splicing the lead from a backup reel to a waveguide of a feed reel which is feeding a lead out of the pay-out stand.

A cable construction having a cable core of elements saturated with a filling material and surrounded by a barrier film which is surrounded by an outer sheath characterized by the inner surface of the barrier film having sub-areas containing an adhesive material with the remaining sub-areas being free of the adhesive layer. In one embodiment, an armored layer is interposed between the barrier film and the cable core and an outer adhesive layer is interposed between the barrier film and the outer sheath.
