A process for recovering uranium from components contaminated with uranium oxide includes providing a cleaning apparatus with a cleaning solution for dissolving the uranium oxide of the components, carrying out a cleaning process by introducing a batch of components into the cleaning apparatus, and carrying out a measurement for determining the uranium content of the components. The cleaning and the measuring are repeated if a limit value for the uranium content is exceeded. The components are discharged from the process if the uranium content falls below a limit value. The cleaning is carried out on a plurality of successive batches of components until a control measurement indicates an unsatisfactory cleaning action of the cleaning solution. The uranium oxide dissolved in the cleaning solution is recovered after indication of the unsatisfactory cleaning action.

The invention provides a method of preparing irradiation targets for radioisotope production in instrumentation tubes of a nuclear power reactor, the method comprising the steps of: providing a powder consisting of an oxide of a rare earth metal having a purity of greater than 99% and, optionally, an organic binder; pelletizing the powder and optionally the organic binder to form a substantially spherical green body having a diameter of from between 1 to 10 mm; and sintering the spherical green body in solid phase at a temperature of at least 70 percent of a solidus temperature of the rare earth metal oxide powder and for a time sufficient to form a round sintered rare earth metal oxide target having a sintered density of at least 80 percent of the theoretical density.

An optical spectrometer comprises at least two coupling apertures with different mode field diameters, a means for dispersing the light beams exiting each of the coupling apertures along a dispersion axis and at least two decoupling apertures on which the dispersed light beams are imaged and whose mode field diameters each correspond to the mode field diameters of the associated coupling apertures. Due the enlarged mode field diameter, a larger spectral fraction of dispersed light beams, i.e., light of a larger spectral bandwidth, can be coupled into the decoupling aperture than into the decoupling aperture.

A photodiode having an antireflection coating for use in optical measuring devices has its antireflection coating so selected that it provides in a predetermined wavelength range an approximately constant conversion factor. An optical plug connector for an optical measuring device between an internal light waveguide optical fiber and an external light waveguide optical fiber maintains a distance d between the ends of the fibers which is greater than the coherence length of the light to be transmitted through the coupling. A protective circuit for a semiconductor laser supplied with an excitation current by a current generator circuit is created using a transducer, whose output is controlled by the laser light, a limit circuit cooperating with the transducer and a current shunt circuit energized by the limit circuit and switched in parallel with the semiconductor laser. Once the permissible emitted light power is reached, excessive excitation current is diverted to the shunt circuit. Exemplary embodiments of the invention are found to achieve response times below 20 ns and are able to protect the semiconductor laser from overload currents even during power-on and power off.

A circuit for the conversion of an electrical input signal into an optical output signal is disclosed. A portion of the main beam from a laser diode that provides the optical output is reflected to a PIN diode with a glass pane. Linearization of the electro-optical conversion process over a wide frequency range is achieved through a feedback loop. For operation at frequencies higher than that of the feedback loop bandwidth, the various conversion factors for low and high frequencies can be additionally adapted.

A safety device for a light signal generator only activates a laser beam emerging from an optical fiber connector when an optical fiber is connected. By inserting a plug of the optical fiber into the connector of the light signal generator a photodetecting circuit is caused to provide a control signal, which activates the laser.
