A projectile fuze () having fuze electronics in which the time of flight (T) can be programmed, having a timer/counter which counts up to the programmed time of flight (T)&#x2014;minus a defined time value (&#x394;t)&#x2014;and then charges an electrical firing circuit, and having a mechanical safety and arming unit () which switches a firing chain to the armed position after a specific time interval. The firing chain has an electrical detonator (), a fuze needle (), a piercing detonator () and a booster charge (). The projectile fuze () has a pyrotechnic force element (), which is interconnected with the fuze electronics and mechanically blocks the safety and arming unit () until the time of flight (T) minus the predetermined time value (&#x394;t) is reached, after which the electrical firing circuit is charged and the safety and arming unit () is unlocked to the armed position by initiation of the force element ().

A shell fuse has a target acquisition sensor, such as an impact sensor, and a firing train in which a firing device carrier is movable from a safe position into an armed position. Overflight safety all the way to the target is afforded in a simple manner. There is provided a force element, in particular a pyrotechnic trigger device, which can be initiated by the response of the sensor. The force element is coupled to the firing device carrier such that the firing device carrier is movable into the armed position.

Shell fuse

An energy supply device for a mortar fuse includes a housing, a driven rotary shaft including a cylindrical shaft surface rotatably disposed in a stationary cylindrical bearing surface in the housing, and a fan connected to the shaft for rotating the shaft in a single direction of rotation in a speed range of 30,000-50,000 rpm. Either of the cylindrical bearing surface or the cylindrical shaft surface has a destructible coating of polytetrafluoroethylene, the coating having a thickness in the range of 0.02-0.03 mm, and being destructible in response to rotation of the shaft in the speed range for a period of time no longer than 5 minutes.

A mortar includes a fuse device having a detonator, and a firing booster arranged to be ignited in response to detonation of the detonator. The detonator is detonated by a firing pin. Advancement of the firing pin toward the detonator is effected by an electrically ignitable pyrotechnic charge.

A fuse device for a mortar shell includes an impact weight carrying a detonation charge and arranged to impact against a firing pin when the mortar shell strikes a target. A safety arm locks the impact weight against movement toward the firing pin in a safety position. The safety arm is movable out of locking relationship with the impact arm to establish an armed condition of the fuse device. Energy for moving the safety arm is stored in a spring. That energy is stored after the mortar shell has been launched, because an impeller is rotated by an air flow generated by the moving mortar shell, and that impeller rotation is transmitted to the spring to store energy.

Objects are detonated by placing charges adjacent respective ones of the objects and connecting the charges to a time fuse by means of respective explosive cords for detonating all of the charges simultaneously when the time fuse fires. The time fuse can be set by fitting a clock to the time fuse. The clock has separate timer mechanisms which can be wound-up simultaneously and which prevent the clock from being fitted to the time fuse if the timer mechanisms have run down asynchronously. An adapter can be attached to the time fuse for releasing a safety of the time fuse upon receiving a remote signal such as an encoded radio signal.

Apparatus for detonating a plurality of objects

A fuse for a projectile comprises a first igniter. A rotor is rotatable to bring a second igniter and a detonator into a live position in alignment with the first igniter. The second igniter and detonator are spaced apart to define a recess therebetween. A retardation charge is mounted in that recess which can be selectively brought into alignment with the first and second igniters and the detonator if delayed ignition is desired.

A fuse for low-spin or non-spin projectiles comprises a detonator-carrying rotor movable to a live position. The rotor is released for movement in response to firing recoil. Movement of the rotor is effected by a spring which is relaxed prior to recoil firing and is energized in response to firing recoil.

In a fuse for projectiles, a timing ring is mounted rotatably around the longitudinal axis of the fuse, whereby the ignition time or the ignition delay time may be set. To resist rotation of the set timing ring, the timing ring is secured by means of a friction system comprising a friction ring with a friction nut abutting against it. By screwing-down the friction nut, a frustoconical outer surface of the friction nut bears against a frustoconical inner surface of the friction ring to increase the resistance to rotation of the friction ring and thus the timing ring.
