A method, programming product, and/or system is disclosed for identifying flaws in integrated circuits, e.g., processors, that includes: selecting from a list of a plurality of timing issues in an integrated circuit, where each timing issue on the list is represented by one or more VHDL code lines, a particular timing issue to investigate; tracing back the selected one or more VHDL code lines, corresponding to the selected particular timing issue to investigate, to one or more selected physical design VHDL (PD-VHDL) code lines; logically navigating across the one or more selected PD-VHDL code lines to one or more corresponding normalized VHDL (NVDHL) code lines; and tracing back the one or more corresponding NHVDL code lines to one or more short-hand VHDL (SVHDL) code lines to identify one or more code lines, written by a code designer, responsible for the particular timing issue being investigated.

System for collaborative hardware RTL logic timing debug in integrated circuit designs

A first plurality of hardware description language (HDL) files describe a hierarchical integrated circuit design utilizing a simplified HDL syntax that omits specification of logical clock connections for at least some entities in the hierarchical integrated circuit design. The hierarchical integrated circuit design as described by the first plurality of HDL files is processed to automatically add logical clock connections for entities in the hierarchical integrated circuit design for which specification of logical clock connections are omitted in the first plurality of HDL files. Based on the processing, a second plurality of HDL files defining the hierarchical integrated circuit design is generated.

Based on a directive in a control file, a processor pre-routes, within a hierarchical integrated circuit design, a signal through one or more levels of design hierarchy between a signal source at a higher level of the design hierarchy and an entity instance at a lower level of the design hierarchy. The processor processes entity instances in the design hierarchy in a bottom-up manner to insert technology-specific structures into the hierarchical integrated circuit design. A method, computer program product, and/or system is disclosed for testing integrated circuits, e.g., processors, that includes: generating a software design prototype of the functional behavior of an integrated circuit to be tested; creating a lab All-Events-Trace (AET) normalized model of the integrated circuit, wherein the normalized model captures the functions of the integrated circuit and not the non-functional aspects of the integrated circuit; generating a lab scenario using the software design prototype and the AET normalized model of the integrated circuit for a particular cycle of interest, wherein the lab scenario contains initialization for all signals that have hardware information; and generating a replayed lab normalized AET for the particular cycle of interest.

A processor receives, as input, a first hardware description language (HDL) file defining an entity of a modular circuit design. The first HDL file instantiates, by a storage element declaration in a hardware description language, a storage element within the entity. The first HDL file omits a port map for the storage element. Based on the first HDL file, the processor automatically fully elaborates a port map for the storage element. The processor stores, in data storage, a derived second HDL file defining the entity and including the port map.

A method for collaborative logic designing and debugging of a circuit includes initiating, via a session manager, a hardware debug session that includes a plurality of instances of client applications that can access one or more source-codes associated with a logic design of the circuit, the plurality of instances of client applications configured to replicate an execution state of the logic design. The method also includes analyzing, using an instance of a first client application from the plurality of instances of client applications, a defect in the logic design based on the execution state of the logic design. The method also includes editing, using an instance of a second client application from the plurality of instances of client applications, the one or more source-codes, to repair the defect in the logic design.

Method and apparatus for managing connections within a netlist include using a clone module to the connections between different components within the netlist. A buffer may be inserted between components of a netlist to split a connection into multiple segments and then moved into an associated first instance. One or more hardware description language (HDL) files describe a plurality of hierarchically arranged design entities defining a digital design to be simulated and a plurality of configuration entities not belonging to the digital design that logically control settings of a plurality of configuration latches in the digital design. The HDL file(s) are compiled to obtain a simulation executable model of the digital design and an associated configuration database. The compiling includes parsing a configuration statement that specifies an association between an instance of a configuration entity and a specified configuration latch, determining whether or not the specified configuration latch is described in the HDL file(s), and if not, creating an indication in the configuration database that the instance of the configuration latch had a specified association to a configuration latch to which it failed to bind.

A logic design and synthesis program, method and system provides intelligibility and independence of separate blocks in digital logic designs at the synthesis level. The sequential and combinational logic are separated and the sequential logic is then mapped to flip-flop library components. State-retaining elements, i.e., flip-flops detected in the input hardware description language (HDL) are represented in the sequential logic HDL output. The combinational logic HDL and the sequential logic HDL are connected only by signals, so signals are introduced to represent the flip-flop signals and variables detected in the input HDL. The sequential and combinational logic HDL are then synthesized to produce the design.

The signal state that a signal of interest within a system under test has during each of a plurality of cycles of operation of the system under test is stored in a trace file. In association with the signal state, information regarding a requested access to the signal state by a control program during a particular cycle among the plurality of cycles is also stored. From the trace files a presentation is generated that presents, for at least a signal of interest within the system under test, a plurality of signal state indications, each indicating a respective state that the signal had during a one of a plurality of cycles of operation of the system under test. The presentation also indicates, in a graphically distinctive manner, at least one cycle of operation during which a control program requested access to a state of the signal, so that the influence of the control program on the state of the system under test is visually apparent.

Asynchronous behavior of a circuit is modeled by modifying latches in a netlist to add an extra port to the latches, e.g., a single-port latch is transformed into a dual-port latch. Each input port has an enable line and a data input. The data input in the added port is a feedback line from the latch output, and the enable line in the added port is the logical NOR of all of the original enable lines. By adding this extra latch port in the higher-level model, it becomes possible to introduce assertion logic to ensure that one and only one latch port for a given latch is ever active during the same simulation cycle. The model can then be tested earlier in the design methodology prior to the availability of the post-synthesis netlist. The model can also be used in both simulation and formal or semi-formal verification.

In response to receiving HDL file(s) that specify a plurality of hierarchically arranged design entities defining a design to be simulated and that specify an instrumentation entity for monitoring simulated operation of the design, an instrumented simulation executable model of the design is built. Building the model includes compiling the HDL file(s) specifying the plurality of hierarchically arranged design entities defining the design and instantiating at least one instance of each of the plurality of hierarchically arranged design entities, and further includes instantiating an instance of the instrumentation entity within an instance of a particular design entity among the plurality of design entities and, based upon a reference in an instrumentation statement in the one or more HDL files, logically attaching an input of the instance of the instrumentation entity to an input source within the design that is outside the scope of the particular design entity.

Selective compilation of a simulation model in view of unavailable higher level signals

A method, system and computer program product for modeling variables in subprograms of a HDL program. A subprogram is provided with an initial value of a variable of an element being modeled and the subprogram is stored in memory of a data processing system. In response to a subprogram call, a copy of the stored subprogram is provided to the requesting HDL program. During execution, the initial value of the variable in the provided copy of the subprogram may be modified by the HDL program, but the value retains unchanged in the stored subprogram.
