Binders curable thermally and/or by high-energy radiation

Compounds having isocyanate groups with or without blocking, allophanate groups and free-radically polymerizable C&mdash;C double bonds, the C&mdash;C double bonds being in activated form by virtue of a carbonyl group attached directly to them or by virtue of an oxygen atom in ether function (activated double bonds), derived from polyisocyanates and alcohols A which in addition to the alcohol group also carry an activated double bond (compounds I). The invention additionally relates to radiation-curable formulations and coating compositions comprising the compounds I, to methods for coating using these substances, and to coated articles produced using these methods. Furthermore, the invention relates to the use of the compounds I in radiation-curable compositions such as in casting compositions, dental compounds, composite materials, sealing compounds, adhesives, troweling compounds, printing inks, in photostructurable compositions such as solder resists, photoresists, photopolymeric printing plates, and stereolithography resins.

Curable polyurethane polymer

In a process for improving the adhesive strength of radiation-cured films of acrylate resins which comprise compounds having at least one amine group and at least one unsaturated acrylate group and, in particular, an amino-modified acrylate resin having a molecular weight Mn of at least 300, on substrates, the acrylate resins are admixed with amine-hardenable polyepoxides having an epoxide value of from 1 to 15 mol/kg such as polyglycidyl esters or polyglycidyl ethers. Preferred curable mixtures of amine-modified acrylate resins with polyepoxides have amine numbers of from 1 to 250 mg KOH/g and epoxide values of from 0.1 to 4 mol/kg. The mixtures applied as coating films to metal substrates or plastics substrates, in particular, are radiation-cured with, e.g., UV light and an at least partial amine hardening of the polyepoxide compounds in the mixture is conducted by thermal conditioning at, e.g., from 50 to 120&deg; C.

Improving adhesion of acrylate resins

Aqueous dispersions of mixtures of (a) polyurethanes having hydrophilic groups which result in water dispersibility of the polyurethane and (b) radiation-curable (meth)acrylate prepolymers which are dilutable in at least 5% by weight of water, such as hydroxyl-containing polyether acrylates, are suitable, owing to their penetration behavior and their high solids absorption in paper, for use as radiation-curable coating or impregnating materials for paper substrates.

Compounds having alcoholic hydroxyl groups are esterified with acrylic or methacrylic acid in the presence of copper(II) salts or mixtures thereof as polymerization inhibitors and in the presence of a hydrocarbon as a water-entraining agent with removal of the water of reaction at from 90 to 150&deg; C. After the esterification, the copper salt is precipitated as copper sulfide and is separated off from the ester. The light-color (meth)acrylates resulting in the high yields are particularly suitable for coatings containing colored pigment on substrates such as wood, paper, mineral building materials, plastics or metal.
