A tire composition is disclosed. The composition comprises a rubber component and based on 100 parts by weight (phr) of the rubber component, 50-200 phr of covered silica, with the covered silica comprising silica core and a first resin covering the silica core, wherein the first resin is not chemically bonded to the silica core. The silica core is covered with the first resin by mixing a slurry comprising silica core with a mixture containing the first resin as a solution, an aqueous dispersion; or a solution by dissolving the first resin in a solvent.

Tire compositions and methods for making thereof

The disclosure relates to tire tread compositions and methods for making. The compositions include a rubber, a rosin ester resin and at least one filler. The rosin ester resin is characterized as having a PAN number of less than 25, an acid number less than 20, a hydroxyl number of less than 30, a combined acid number and hydroxyl value of less than 50. The tire tread composition has a wet grip resistance to rolling resistance indicator ratio ((tan &#x3b4; at 0&#xb0; C.)/tan &#x3b4; at 60&#xb0; C.) higher than a tire tread composition containing a comparable amount of a rosin ester having a combined acid number and hydroxyl value of more than 50.

Tire composition and method for making thereof

A composition comprising a tread enhancement additive for use in a number of applications including tires is disclosed. The tread enhancement additive is prepared from an unmodified alkyl phenol resin by reducing the hydroxyl value of the unmodified alkyl phenol resin, forming a modified alkyl phenol resin having a decreased hydroxyl value. The composition exhibits improved performance characteristics such as enhanced wet grip and decreased rolling resistance and improved abrasion resistance.

Tread enhancement additives for tires

The disclosure relates to a composition for use in a number of applications including tires. The composition comprises a blend of a rubber component, reinforcing particulate fillers, and based on 100 parts by weight (phr) of the rubber component; from about 5 phr to about 70 phr of a terpene phenol resin having a softening point temperature in the range of from about 100&#xb0; C. to about 170&#xb0; C. and having a hydroxyl value in the range from about 5 to about 30. In one embodiment, the terpene phenol resin has a number average molecular weight of from about 700 Da to about 790 Da, a weight average molecular weight of from about 930 Da to about 1090 Da, and a polydispersity index of from about 1.25 to about 1.45.

Rubber compositions containing improved tread enhancement additives and use thereof

Provided herein are novel tire tread compositions. The tire tread compositions include a rubber, a terpene-based resin and at least one filler. The terpene-based resin comprises one terpene-based monomer such as &#x3b1;-pinene, referred to as a hompolymer, or combinations of several terpene-based monomers selected from &#x3b1;-pinene, &#x3b2;-pinene, &#x3b4;-3 carene, &#x3b2;-phellandrene and pyrolysates of &#x3b1;-pinene, &#x3b2;-pinene, &#x3b4;-3 carene, &#x3b4;-2 carene, turpentine, and combinations thereof. The terpene-based resin is generally substantially free of limonene. The terpene-based resin has a softening point of about 80&#xb0; C. to about 130&#xb0; C., a number average molecular weight (M) ranging from about 500 g/mol to about 775 g/mol and a glass transition temperature (T) of from about 38&#xb0; C. to about 81&#xb0; C. The tire tread composition having the terpene-based resin shows improvements of tan &#x3b4; at 0&#xb0;, wet grip and rolling resistance as compared with the compositions without the terpene-based resin or comprising alpha methyl styrene resin.

Tread enhancement additives

A process for the preparation of a shaped rubber composition comprising combining a rubber compound with an extender compound to produce a mixture; drying the mixture to produce a dried mixture; and shaping the mixture wherein the extender compound comprises a natural or hydrocarbon resin, which possesses a glass transition temperature of at equal to or greater than about &#x2212;70&#xb0; C. and an acid value of 50 mg KOH/g or less and wherein the mixture is shaped into particles or bales.
