A process for preparing olefin homopolymers or copolymers by polymerization of at least one olefin in a hydrocarbon (mixture) in the presence of a molar mass regulator, a mixed catalyst and a substance which increases the electrical conductivity of the hydrocarbon (mixture) and is soluble in the hydrocarbon or the mixture of hydrocarbons or which reacts with components of the mixed catalyst, wherein the mixed catalyst is obtainable by reaction of a magnesium alkoxide with titanium(IV) halide and comprises titanium in the oxidation states four and three and also an organic aluminum compound, where the molar ratio of Ti(IV) to Ti(III) is from 100:1 to 1:100. The process makes it possible to prepare, in particular, polyethylenes having an ultrahigh molecular weight. The formation of deposits on the walls during the polymerization is significantly reduced.

A method for the production of certain ethylene copolymers which comprises saponifying a granular feedstock which includes a polymer of at least 50% ethylene, 2 to 50% of certain esters of C.sub.3 to C.sub.12 alkene carboxylic acids, 0 to 30% vinyl esters of certain aliphatic carboxylic acids having 1 to 6 carbon atoms, and up to 3% of C.sub.3 to C.sub.12 alkene carboxylic acids. In particular, the improvement comprises maintaining the feedstock at a particle size range of 0.1 to 8.0 mm, and suspending it in 1-10 parts of a ketone to 1 part of the feedstock, the ketone being of the formula. ##STR1## wherein R and R' are individually an alkyl radical having 1 to 6 carbon atoms, and carrying out the saponification at a temperature of 40.degree. to 75.degree. A new catalyst for the homo- and copolymerization of .alpha.-olefins by a Ziegler type catalysis is described, the catalyst being prepared by reaction of a titanium (IV) compound with a carrier substance in the presence of a solution of at least about 0.1 weight percent of an atactic poly-.alpha.-olefin followed by reduction of the reaction product with an organoaluminum compound in an inert inorganic solvent and activation with an organoaluminum compound. The novel catalyst is useful in the preparation of extremely high molecular weight polyolefins of fine grained structures.
