Embodiments of the invention include a method for degassing liquid sulphur in a container, a first area of the container being flooded with liquid sulphur and a second area of the container being flooded with a gas, and a gas flow being injected into the first area, wherein liquid sulphur is sprayed into the second area. Embodiments of the invention include a device for degassing liquid sulphur having a container comprising two adjacent areas, the first area being flooded with liquid sulphur and the second area being flooded with gas, and having at least one device for injecting a gas flow into the first area, characterized by a device for spraying liquid sulphur opening into the second area. Other embodiments are also included herein.

Method and device for degassing liquid sulphur

The invention relates to a method for treating a hydrocarbon feed gas stream containing COand HS to recover a purified COgas stream (vii), comprising: a. Separating said feed gas stream into a sweetened gas stream (i), and an acid gas stream (ii); b. Introducing stream (ii) into a Claus unit wherein an oxygen-rich stream is used as a combustive agent in the Claus furnace, thereby recovering a liquid stream of elemental sulfur (iii) and a tail gas stream (iv); c. Introducing the stream (iv) into a Tail Gas Treatment Unit (TGTU) thereby separating said tail gas stream into a COenriched gas stream (v), and a stream enriched in sulfur compounds (vi); d. Compressing stream (v) exiting the TGTU; e. Passing the compressed COenriched gas through a COpurification unit thereby recovering a purified COgas stream (vii), and the device for carrying out said method.

The apparatus comprises a container which has a central cooling chamber and an annular chamber which surrounds the cooling chamber and contains catalyst. The gas mixture to be reacted contains H.sub.2 S and SO.sub.2 enters the annular chamber and first flows through the catalyst. The cooling chamber contains at least one coolant line and is provided with a passage for gas mixture coming from the annular chamber and with a gas outlet. The cooling chamber is provided at its bottom end with a drain for the liquid elementary sulfur .
