Binder combinations for the formulation of cathodic paints comprising blends of epoxy resins as follows: (A) 40 to 80% by weight of reaction products of epoxy acrylates with basic monoisocyanates; (B) 5 to 30% by weight of reaction products of epoxy amine adducts with unsaturated monoisocyanates, and (C) an epoxy resin modified with a semi-ester of a dicarboxylic acid anhydride and an N-hydroxyalkyloxazolidin and an amine, rendered water soluble through neutralization of the basic groups. The binder combinations as defined have enhanced throwing power and improved stability of the paint tank.

Binder combination for cathodically depositable paints

Binders water-dilutable upon neutralization with inorganic and/or organic acids comprising the reaction product of (A) a monoadduct of an N-hydroxyalkyloxazolidine and a diisocyanate with (B) a hydroxyl group containing polymer, the ratio of (A) and (B) adjusted to provide a final product with an amine value sufficient to provide water dilutability upon acid neutralization, and a process for the formation of the binders, is described. The binders, upon stoving, provide films with good resistance characteristics and have reduced losses.

Water-dilutable binders carrying oxazolidine groups

Binders water-dilutable upon neutralization with inorganic and/or organic acids comprising the reaction product of (A) resins having at least 2 1,2-epoxy groups per molecule and an epoxy equivalent of at least 160; and (B) a semiester of a dicarboxylic acid and an N-2-hydroxyalkyloxazolidine, and a process for the formation of the binders, is described. The binders have sufficient basic groups for neutralization with acids to provide water dilutability, as well as the functional groups required for crosslinking of the binders. The binders upon stoving provide films with good resistance characteristics and have reduced losses.
