A steering wheel unit for a motor vehicle, in particular a passenger car, comprises a connection hub which may be non-rotatably connected with a steering shaft of a steering device, a steering wheel rim which is non-rotatably connected with the connection hub by spokes, and a central piece which is mounted by a spacer element to the connection hub so as to be rotatable relative to the steering shaft and the steering wheel rim. The steering wheel unit further comprises a coupling device which arrests the central piece with respect to a rotational movement of the steering wheel rim. The spacer element has a first end which is non-rotatably connected with the central piece, and has a second other end which is rotatably mounted to the connection hub and constructed as a crash element. The crash element fails after a predetermined failure value of a force driving the central piece towards the connection hub. The steering wheel rim is supported by its spokes on the central piece at least in a direction leading from the steering wheel rim to the connection hub and the spokes are rotatably mounted on the central piece in a region of the support.

The invention relates to an air bag for occupant restraint systems of motor vehicles, which air bag is automatically inflated by means of a gas generator in the event of an accident. In order subsequently to allow slackening of the air bag, a kidney-shaped or crescent shaped zone of the air bag cover, which is arranged at a greater distance from and approximately centrally to a central region of the air bag facing the occupant, is produced from gas-permeable fabric. Due to the specified shape and arrangement of this zone, the necessary load-bearing capacity of the air bag remains guaranteed.

A headrest for a vehicle seat having a backrest is provided which has a head cushion fastened to two supporting rods and two side pieces which are integrated in the head cushion. In the in-use position, the side pieces project laterally on the head cushion beyond its cushion front and, in the not-in-use position are accommodated inside the contour of the head cushion. For implementing a headrest of a compact minimum size and an aesthetically attractive shape which optimally meets the demands made on a headrest with respect to the driving operation and the resting phase, each side piece is swivellably disposed on a vertical tube section which, in turn, is fastened on a supporting rod so that it can be swivelled about a swivel shaft extending transversely thereto. Using an upper and lower cross traverse, the two tube sections are fixedly connected with one another and each carry a cushion enlargement of the head cushion. The side pieces are constructed in such a manner using a parallelepiped-shaped basic cushion body and a padded wedge piece continuing therefrom in one piece that, in their not-in-use position, they cover one another and end flush with the front and rear side of the cushion enlargements.

The suitcase may be provided with wheels which engage in the guide rails, or the suitcase may be attached to a dolly with wheels which engage in the guide rails.

A stowage-space arrangement for vehicles with a folding roof, especially for convertibles with a solid roof that can be folded in two parts, includes a stowage space which is arranged between side walls of the body and into which at least one rearward roof part of the folding roof can be retracted. The rearward roof part includes a rear-wall area which slopes obliquely relative to the roof surface. To allow the rearward roof part to be made longer and to provide an improved facility for stowing luggage in the interior space of the vehicle, the stowage space has at its bottom end a large-size floor area which, with the folding roof stowed, is covered by the rear-wall area of the rearward roof part. A free space that can be used as a luggage space is provided above the rear-wall area of the retracted roof part.

The invention relates to an occupant restraint system for motor vehicles having a gas bag or airbag which, when not in use, is accommodated collapsed in a housing or the like. In the event of an accident to the motor vehicle, the airbag is automatically inflated by a gas generator to form an absorption cushion protecting the occupant. In order to reduce if possible the risk of injury to the occupant on inflation of the airbag, the airbag is inflated with a relatively small expansion rate towards the driver and, in the lateral direction, with a relatively high expansion rate.

A cover arrangement is disclosed for an air bag which is arranged in a motor vehicle and is automatically inflated to form an impact cushion for an occupant in the event of an accident. The cover arrangement includes a covering protecting the air bag being torn open at intended tearing lines. Provision is made for the covering to be constructed as a support of a membrane switch arrangement which, for its safety during inflation of the air bag and during the tearing open of the covering thus caused, is connected to a cladding of the covering made of leather or similar material so as to be resistant to tearing.

A steering wheel arrangement for motor vehicles with a dish-shaped steering wheel provided with a steering wheel hub which is adapted to be flangedly connected on a central steering spindle rotatably supported in a casing, and with an impact device arranged inside of the steering wheel dish which maintains its position independently of the rotation of a steering wheel rim, whereby a gearing in the form of a pinion shaft is provided which is supported parallel to the steering spindle and has two identical pinions non-rotatably arranged on the same; the pinions are in engagement with gears coaxially supported with respect to the steering spindle, of which the first gear is arranged on the side of the steering column casing and the second gear on the side of the impact device. The first gear is thereby rotatably supported on the casing and is non-rotatably connected with the steering wheel rim while the second gear is attached safe against rotation on an end section of the steering spindle and a support flange fixed at the casing protrudes between the two gears whereby the pinion shaft is supported in the support flange and the impact device is locally secured at the same.
