A modular headliner assembly for an automotive vehicle comprises a planar center support mat adapted for mounting to a roof panel of the vehicle. A perimeter support mat extends outwardly from the outer periphery of the center support mat and is adapted for mounting to the roof panel of the vehicle. The perimeter support mat includes a main portion and an outwardly extending flap portion pivotally connected to the main portion by a living hinge. An airbag module is mounted to an interior surface of the main portion of the perimeter support mat adjacent the flap portion. The airbag module includes an inflatable airbag and an airbag canister for inflating the airbag. The flap portion is movable between a closed position covering the airbag and an open position pivoted away from the airbag providing a passageway for deployment of the airbag through the headliner assembly when inflated by the airbag canister. One or more additional components, such as a grab handle, coat hook, accessory light and speaker are also mounted to the exterior surface of the perimeter support mat.

Modular roof and headliner assembly

A process for the manufacture of moulded material-covered products is provided wherein material is placed over a mould and held by clamping means proximate the periphery of the mould and thereafter material is drawn into the mould to conform to the shape of the interior surface of the mould prior to the injection of foamable thermoplastics material into the mould to form the product. The process includes the step of disposing a stop at predetermined positions on the material so that when the material is drawn into the mould, the stop precludes further material from ingressing into the mould and any further movement of material into mould is by the stretching of material. A mould for moulding the moulded product is also provided which includes a bottom and side wall formation surrounding the bottom proximate the periphery of the bottom, the bottom carrying on its surface a design to be carried by the moulded product, the bottom being separate from the side wall formation sot hat the side wall formation can be spaced from the bottom and be lowered to engage the bottom proximate the periphery of the bottom. The bottom may be one piece or may include a base supporting a tongue movable to a raised position for receiving a bag or sack of material for the purposes of injecting foamable thermoplastics material onto the bag or sack.

Process for the manufacture of moulded material-covered product

A method of making a seat back which includes the steps of sewing a front panel and a back panel together along sewing seams which are exterior with respect to the interior surfaces of the panels so as to form a bag-like structure in a condition wherein the exterior surfaces of the front and rear panels are generally facing one another, sliding the bag-like structure onto a tongue-like mold while the bag-like structure is in the condition in which the panels thereof were sewn together and without inverting the same in any way so as to bring the exterior surface of the front panel into face-to-face relation with a mold surface of the tongue-like mold, contacting the exterior surface of the front panel with the mold surface of the tongue-like mold, forming a body of foam material on the interior surface of the front panel while the exterior surface thereof is in contact with the mold surface, inverting the bag-like structure with the body of foam material adhered to the front panel thereof, and mounting the inverted bag-like structure over an interior frame.

Process for the manufacture of automotive seat backs

A mould for moulding the moulded product is also provided which includes a bottom and side wall formation surrounding the bottom proximate the periphery of the bottom, the bottom carrying on its surface a design to be carried by the moulded product, the bottom being separate from the side wall formation so that the side wall formation can be spaced from the bottom and be lowered to engage the bottom proximate the periphery of the bottom. The bottom may be one piece or may include a base supporting a tongue moveable to a raised position for receiving a bag or sack of material for the purposes of injecting foamable thermoplastics material onto the bag or sack.
