A solar reaction system which produces hydrogen by reduction of hydronium ions using methylviologen or a related compound as an electron-transfer agent and a platinum electron-transfer catalyst, wherein the catalyst is modified with a water-soluble divalent sulphur compound, or a sulphur compound in which the sulphur is reducible to the divalent state, in an amount sufficient to inhibit hydrogenation side-reactions during the solar reduction process but not sufficient to significantly suppress the reduction of hydronium ion to hydrogen by the electron-transfer agent.

A method of polymerizing a composition comprising a mixture of monomers said monomer mixture containing a major proportion of an unsaturated carboxylic acid and a minor proportion of a crosslinking agent which method comprises irradiating a said mixture of monomers in a nonpolar and nonhydroxylic solvent with electromagnetic radiation having a wavelength greater than 180 nanometers and preferably less than 800 nanometers preferably in the presence of a photosensitive initiator, hereinafter referred to as a sensitizer, at a temperature in the range from 10.degree. C to 90.degree. C, the concentration of unsaturated carboxylic acid being less than 20% w/v, and isolating the polymer so formed.

A system for the chemical storage of radiant energy in which either: A. 1,8-diaryl-1a,2,7,7a-tetrahydro-1,2,7-metheno-1H-cyclopropa[b]naphthalenes (1) are converted on heating to 1,2-diaryl-2a,8b-dihydrocyclobuta[a]naphthalenes (2) or 8,9-diaryl-benzocyclooctatetraenes (3), with the release of heat; and exposure of either compounds (3) or compounds (2) to suitable radiation results in the photochemical synthesis of compounds (1); or B. substituted naphthalenes undergo photochemical dimerization to form 1,2,2a,7,8,12b-hexahydro-1,8,2,7-ethanedihylidenedibenzo[a,e]cyclobuta[c]c yclooctenes. On heating, the latter revert to the original naphthalenes with the release of heat.

A method of polymerizing a composition comprising a mixture of monomers said monomer mixture containing from 3 to 100% of amines containing two or more allyl groups which method comprises irradiating a solution of a hydrofluoride, hydrochloride or sulphate salt of said amine in a non polar and non hydroxylic solvent with electromagnetic radiation having a wavelength greater than 180 nanometers and preferably less than 800 nano meters preferably in the presence of a radiation sensitizer at a temperature in the range from -80.degree. to +120.degree. C preferably 10.degree. C to 90.degree. C and isolating the polymer so formed.
