A process for producing in situ foams based on alkali metal silicates characterized in that an aqueous alkali metal silicate solution on the one hand and a hardener solution on the other hand are accomodated in separate pressurized containers A and B, prior to use the hardener solution in container B is added to and mixed with the silicate solution in container A in the presence of a suitable emulsifier for foam formation and a propellent gas liquid under high pressure between 0.degree. and 50.degree. C., and, on actuation of the discharge valve of container A, an alkali metal silicate foam is discharged. The alkali metal silicate foams formed are distinguished by non-inflammability, high temperature stability and good heat-insulating properties and are used as a filling, construction and insulating material or the like in the building industry.

Process for producing water glass foams from aerosol containers

A method for the production of a more water-resistant foamed element from waterglass consisting essentially of the steps of mixing together a major amount of an alkali metal silicate solution, with inorganic fillers, at least one alkali-resistant wetting agent in an amount sufficient to form a stable foam, at least one compound capable of hardening a waterglass foam in an amount sufficient to cause said alkali metal silicate to harden, and sufficient natural latex dispersion to cause the foamed element to have a greater water resistance, mechanically foaming said mixture by the incorporation of an inert gas thereon, filling the resultant foam into an element form capable of disassembly, curing said foam in said form, and recovering a more water-resistant foamed and cured element. Preferably the natural latex dispersion is employed in a 50% dispersion in an amount of from 0.2% to 30% by weight, preferably from 0.2% to 10% by weight, based on the total mixture. The alkali metal silicate solution used has, in the case of sodium silicate, a solids content of about 27% to 43% by weight at an SiO.sub.2 /Na.sub.2 O molar ratio of about 4 : 1 to 3 : 1 and in the case of potassium silicate a solids content of about 20% to 36% by weight at an SiO.sub.2 /K.sub.2 O molar ratio of about 4 : 1 to 3.4 : 1, it being possible to use any desired mixture ratios of the mentioned alkali metal silicates. The mixture may optionally contain an addition of 0.1% to 2.5% by weight, preferably from 1% to 2% by weight of B.sub.2 O.sub.3. Preferably the wetting agent added to the mixture is an anionic tenside, such as a sodium C.sub.14-16 alkylsulfonate, in an amount of from 0.1% to 10% by weight, preferably from 4% to 6% by weight in the form of a 30% aqueous solution. The fillers to be added to the mixture are inorganic compounds of light specific gravity in a grain size up to 0.1 mm and in an amount of up to 50% by weight, preferably from 10% to 20% by weight. The hardeners are preferably proportioned into the mixture during foaming in amounts of from 1% to 10% by weight, preferably from 2% to 6% by weight. The preferred hardener is glycerine triacetate.

An adhesive composition based upon an aqueous solution of alkali metal silicate with a content of powdered inorganic filler, having good storage stability, which comprises an aqueous alkali metal silicate solution containing: (a) from 10% to 40% by weight of at least one powdered inorganic filler, (b) a suspension effective amount of at least one zinc soap of a fatty acid having from 12 to 22 carbon atoms and (c) from 0 to about 24% by weight of a 50% by weight stable, aqueous dispersion of an alkali-resistant organic polymer, based on the weight of the total composition. Preferably zinc stearate in amounts of from 1% to 5% by weight are added to the adhesives containing powdered inorganic fillers and optionally organic additives on a base of aqueous water glass solutions, to prevent separation phenomena. Sodium and/or potassium silicate solutions can be used, the sodium silicate solution being preferably present in the ratio by weight of 3.3 to 3.9:1 for SiO.sub.2 /Na.sub.2 O, with a solids content of 38% to 28% by weight and the potassium silicate solution at a ratio by weight of 2 to 2.6:1 for SiO.sub.2 /K.sub.2 O, with a solids content of 40% to 29% by weight. The inorganic filler is preferably powdered crystalline calcium carbonate in the form of metamorphous calcite with particle sizes of up to 25 .mu.m.
