A procedure and apparatus for charging and emptying the drying trays in a drying box containing pumpable, solvent-moist starting materials and end products which can be conveyed pneumatically, in which procedure, for filling, the drying trays are closed by means of cover plates and the solvent-moist starting materials are pumped into the filling spaces which are thus formed, these spaces being opened on commencing the drying process, and being closed again following completion of this process, after which the end products are conveyed away from the filling spaces by pneumatic means. This procedure enables drying boxes to be employed for drying even pumpable, solvent-moist products, the recommendations relating, respectively, to explosion protection and to maximum permissible concentrations of toxic materials at workplaces, being complied with, while the operations of charging and emptying the drying boxes are, at the same time, carried out by mechanical means, and hence at lower cost.

A process for purifying crude organic pigments, wherein the crude pigment is suspended in a mixture of two organic liquids which are partially or completely immiscible with one another, the suspension is mixed at 50.degree.-180.degree. C. until equilibrium has been reached, the phases are allowed to separate, the phase containing the impurities (i.e. the first liquid) is separated off and the purified pigment is isolated from the other phase (i.e. the second liquid). Finely divided crude pigments can, directly after purification, be converted, while in the second liquid, into pigmentary forms. The process gives pigments of high purity, which after conversion into pigmentary forms give deep, brilliant colorations.

Purification of crude organic pigments

A .beta.-copper phthalocyanine pigment which consists, to the extent of more than 50% by weight, of flakes which are not less than 10 .mu.m long and 3 .mu.m wide, the length:width ratio being not less than 3.3:1, and which has a reflection maximum between 610 and 640 nm and another between 710 and 740 nm. In surface coatings and printing inks the pigment gives optical effects resembling those of metallic pigments. In a baking finish, reddish brown to bluish gray colorations with a metallic reflectance are obtained.

Novel pigmentary form of .beta.-copper phthalocyanine

Easily water-dispersed formulations of a phthalocyanine pigment which contain--based on the formulation--(a) from 70 to 95% by weight of finely divided phthalocyanine pigment of which the mean primary particle size is less than 0.5 .mu.m, and (b) from 30 to 5% by weight of one or more alkylarylsulfonic acids, where alkyl is of 4 to 20 carbon atoms, but the sum of the alkyl carbon atoms is not less than 8, which alkylarylsulfonic acids may be in the form of water-soluble salts. A fine dispersion of the formulations is obtainable by sprinkling the formulations into water and shaking. The dispersions obtained are stable and can be filtered through a paper filter without leaving a residue. The finely dispersed pigment is absorbed quantitatively on wool, cotton or paper pulp.

Easily water-dispersed formulations of finely divided phthalocyanines

A new pigmentary form of perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic acid diimide of the formula ##STR1## which has a specific surface area (measured by the BET method) of from 5 to 20 m.sup.2 /g and a maximum in the particle size distribution at from 0.2 to 1.mu. in length and from 0.1 to 0.4.mu. in width, the mean ratio of length to width being from 4:1 to 1:1, and the proportion of particles between these size limits being at least 50% of the total distribution. The pure shade of the new pigmentary from gives strongly yellowish red colorations which are very pure and very bright. The new pigment also has a good hiding power, which is from 2 to 3 times as great as that of the pigments of the prior art.

Perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic acid diimide pigment, its manufacture

A new pigmentary form of perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic acid diimide of the formula ##STR1## which has a specific surface area (measured by the BET method) of from 10 to 35 m.sup.2 /g and a maximum in the particle size distribution at from 0.1 to 0.5 .mu.m, the proportion of particles between these sizes being at least 50% of the total distribution and the mean ratio of length to width being from 3:1 to 1:1. The pure shade of the new pigmentary form gives strongly yellowish red colorations which are very pure and very bright. The new pigmentary form also has a good hiding power, which is from 2 to 3 times as great as that of the pigmentary forms of the prior art.

In a process for the manufacture of polychloro-copper phthalocyanines by chlorinating copper phthalocyanines in aluminum chloride/sodium chloride melts at from 110.degree. to 190.degree. C, the improvement wherein from 0.20 to 0.33 part by weight of copper phthalocyanines, per part by weight of melt, is rapidly introduced into the melt at temperatures from the solidification point of the melt to 120.degree. C, and after this material has been introduced, the chlorination, to give polychloro-copper phthalocyanine, is carried out at from 140.degree. to 160.degree. C by rapidly passing chlorine into the mixture. A polychloro-copper phthalocyanine which contains less than 0.05 per cent by weight of aluminum and which can be converted, by any conventional finishing process, into yellowish green pigment forms, is obtained with high space-time yield.

Manufacture of polychloro-copper phthalocyanines

A process for the manufacture of easily dispersed, transparent iron oxide pigments of high tinctorial strength, in which the pigment paste, moist with water, is homogenized under the action of shear forces in the presence of at least one monohydric aliphatic or cycloaliphatic alcohol of 4 to 12 carbon atoms which is partially soluble in water and can be vaporized without decomposition, and the kneaded mixture is then dried under gentle conditions. The pigments are easily dispersed in finishes or binder solutions for printing inks. Very pure and glossy colorations of optimum transparency are obtained.

Manufacture of easily dispersed transparent iron oxide pigments

A process for the manufacture of finely divided polyester-imide powders wherein solutions of polyester-imides in organic solvents are solidified by cooling, the solvent is removed by sublimation and the solid product is pulverized. The powders may be used, as aqueous dispersions, to produce heat-resistant coatings on metallic conductors.

High tinctorial strength, easily dispersible perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboximides and N,N'-dialkylperylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboximides are produced by introducing a finely ground crude pigment whose primary particle size is not more than 0.05 micron into a primary aliphatic or aromatic amine, into a heterocyclic base, into an aliphatic carboxamide, into a mixture thereof, or into from 75 to 84% by weight sulfuric acid and converting it into pigmentary form at a temperature of from ambient temperature to 160.degree.C. The products are easily dispersible pigments of high tinctorial strength.
