Stabilized polyoxymethylene moulding materials

Molding materials comprise polyarylene ethers having terminal hydroxyl groups, polyarylene ethers having terminal groups which are not hydroxyl groups, polyarylene sulfides and furthermore fibrous or particulate fillers, rubber impact modifiers and additives or processing assistants.

Molding materials are based on polyarylene ethers A having terminal anhydride groups and repeating units I ##STR1## in which t and q may each be an integer 0, 1, 2 or 3, T, Q and Z may each be a chemical bond or a group selected from --O--, --S--, --SO.sub.2 --, S.dbd.O, C.dbd.O, --N.dbd.N--, --R.sup.a C.dbd.CR.sup.b -- and --CR.sup.c R.sup.d --, with the proviso that at least one of the groups T, Q or Z is --SO.sub.2 -- or C.dbd.O, R.sup.a and R.sup.b are each hydrogen or C.sub.1 -C.sub.10 -alkyl, R.sup.c and R.sup.d are each hydrogen or a C.sub.1 -C.sub.10 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.10 -alkoxy or C.sub.6 -C.sub.18 -aryl group, where the abovementioned groups may each be substituted by fluorine and/or chlorine and Ar and Ar.sup.1 are each C.sub.6 -C.sub.18 -aryl which may have substituents selected from the group consisting of C.sub.1 -C.sub.10 -alkyl, C.sub.6 -C.sub.18 -aryl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.10 -alkoxy and halogen, or random copolymers or block copolymers thereof.

Molding materials based on polyarylene ethers having terminal anhydride

A process for preparing polyaryl ethers of the formula I or Ia ##STR1## by condensation of at least one appropriate bisphenol with at least one appropriate aromatic dichloride in the presence of an alkali metal carbonate in a dipolar aprotic solvent, is carried out in the presence of a catalyst selected from the alkali metal nitrites and the group of compounds of the formula II ##STR2## where r.sup.1 and r.sup.3 are each hydrogen, C.sub.7 -C.sub.16 -phenylalkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 -alkoxy, fluorine, chlorine, bromine, iodine or nitro, and R.sup.2 is nitro or nitroso, or ##STR3## where R.sup.4 is hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl, fluorine, chlorine, bromine or iodine.

Thermoplastically re-formable plastic sheets with flameproofing means, characterized by a core layer 1-10 mm thick comprised of polyether sulfone or a similar thermoplastic, which core material has a content of at least 0.5 wt. %, preferably at least 2 wt. %, of a flame-protective additive, such as boron trioxide; and said sheet or plate further characterized by outer layers, firmly adhering to and covering the two faces of the core layer, at least 0.05 mm thick and comprised of a thermoplastic having a lower proportional content of the flame-protective additives than the core layer; are particularly useful for interior structures in passenger conveyances, such as airplanes.
