To permit ready matching of a Diesel engine operating circuit to a glow plug system, an interface-and-control unit (1) is provided which includes a microprocessor (MP) which decodes data words received from an engine control unit (MS). The data words are in the form of serially transmitted bits which define, by time duration of the bits. respectively logic '0' and logic '1' values to provide, inherently, simultaneously data information and synchronizing information. For example, the logic '0' bits may be 1/8 of a predetermined clock period (T) whereas the logic '1' bits may be 1/2 of the clock period (T). The microprocessor, thus, can be easily matched to engines of different types and can carry out, on its own, diagnostic routines and indicator functions under command of respective bits being transmitted thereto. An emergency shutoff device responding to a malfunction switches off the feed pump drive, so that because of the lack of feed pressure the check valve closes and blocks off the suction chamber. The engine comes to a stop, as soon as a partial vacuum is established in the suction chamber, which occurs as soon as several revolutions later.

A fuel injection pump for internal combustion engines having a hydraulic control mechanism includes a control cylinder with a control piston actuating a control member, a hydraulic work chamber and one switching valve each for an input and an output controlled by a valve control unit. The inflow to and return from the work chamber is provided with the control valves in order to shut down the engine upon a shutoff or a malfunction in the hydraulic control mechanism. The fuel feed pump is electrically driven, and the hydraulic work chamber communicates with the fuel tank via a relief device. The supply of current to the valve control unit and the feed pump is switched on and off, along with the rest of the current supply to the engine, via a driving switch. Additionally, the valve control unit is embodied such that upon the appearance of a persistent control deviation of the control member, the valve control unit shuts off the feed pump. The relief device includes various variant embodiments operative upon shutoff of the current supply or the occurrence of a malfunction and enables the restoration of the control mechanism to its zero or stopping position.

In a safety and emergency driving control method and an associated arrangement for an internal combustion engine with self-ignition used to power a motor vehicle, various operating parameters of the engine are continuously monitored and respective signals indicative of gas pedal position, engine operating speed, brake actuation, and actual control rod displacement are generated and evaluated to determine simultaneous occurrence of a modified idling operation condition and of a predetermined minimum value of the actual control rod displacement signal. In response to such a simultaneous occurrence the engine control is switched over to another regulation branch which controls the control rod displacement in accordance with a minimum value characteristic line of the control rod displacement. Further peripheral devices are included for providing starting hysteresis and excess speed protection, and for supervising the operation of the control rod displacement sensor. A supervisory device associated with a main computer of the arrangement may also be used to achieve the switch-over independently ofexternal signals.

Safety and emergency driving method for an internal combustion engine

An electronic control device is proposed for manipulated variables of an internal combustion engine having self-ignition. In this device, an injection duration signal is utilized as a load signal. While the injection onset signal can be satisfactorily detected via the opening speed, the hysteresis signal is efficaciously utilized to detect the signal for the end of injection. The proposed solution makes it possible to detect and regulate both the injection onset and the fuel quantity, using only a single transducer in the injection valve, on or in the fuel line, or on the pumping element, and this load signal is available for generalized uses in the control device. It is furthermore possible to obtain an rpm signal on the basis of the signal for injection onset and/or end, and to process it further.
