Enzymatically active protein-enzyme complex membranes are prepared by treating a swollen protein membrane with an aqueous solution of a compatible active enzyme. These membranes are used to effect enzymatic reactions such as hydrolyzing starch, sucrose, urea or cellulose, lysis of cells or isomerizing D-glucose.

Enzymatically active protein-enzyme complex membranes

Presaturated plastic preforms suitable for use in preparing molecularly oriented hollow articles from thermoplastic materials are obtained by adding controlled amounts of a saturant gas, under pressure, into a molten polymer stream residing in the screw channels of a screw plasticizer in a preform injection molding machine. The polymer so treated is then injected into cooled preform molds to obtain the desired article.

Protein-enzyme complex membranes

Enzymatically active Protein-whole microbial cell complex membranes suitable for effecting enzymatic reactions are prepared by forming a dispersion containing synthetic polypeptide or natural protein macromolecules and whole microbial cells, casting a membrane from the dispersion and drying the membrane. In an alternative embodiment, the membranes are formed by electro-codeposition from a dispersion containing the macromolecules and cells. It is desirable to pre-treat the microbial cells to destroy proteolytic activity of the cells to prevent the cells from autolyzing and from destroying the membrane.
