A fluidized bed reactor comprising a housing, and a nozzle grate disposed in the lower portion of the housing and serving to introduce a fluidizing fluid into the reactor. The nozzle grate consists of a plurality of approximately horizontally extending tubes and nozzles provided on such tubes. The tubes are detachably connected to the housing of the reactor and the housing of the reactor has at least one support for each tube, which support supports the tube as it is rotated about its longitudinal axis.

A reactor for drying solids in a heated fluidized bed comprising over the fluidized bed a vapor-collecting space provided with a vapor outlet. Means for feeding the water-containing solids are provided over the vapor-collecting space. A conical distributor surface, which is rotatable about a vertical axis, is provided in the vapor-collecting space below the supplying means and slopes at an angle of 25.degree. to 70.degree. from the horizontal and is formed with at least one aperture. The aperture occupies 10 to 90% of the theoretical overall area of the distributor surface. The distributor surface is rotated at a speed of 20 to 250 revolutions per minute.

Hot solids coming from a fluidized bed reactor are passed through the cooling apparatus and at least in part are recycled to the fluidized bed reactor. In the cooling apparatus the hot solids flow first through a first fluidized bed and then flow downwardly through a gas-collecting space to a second fluidized bed, which is provided with cooling coils and in which the solids flow downwardly to a solids transfer passage and are then raised through a third fluidized bed to a discharge line. The system is controlled to cause solids coming from the first fluidized bed to flow through the gas-collecting space directly to the discharge line.
