A method and system are provided for estimating the location of a mobile radio-communication terminal, the mobile terminal having a plurality of antennas, and being in communication range of at least one transmitter having a plurality of antennas, the method comprising; measuring the time of arrival of a signal transmitted from the M antennas of the at least one transmitter at each of the N antennas of the mobile terminal to determine M&#xd7;N range measurements corresponding to the M&#xd7;N transmission paths of said signal between the M antennas of the transmitter and the N antennas of the mobile terminal; and estimating the location of the mobile terminal based on the M&#xd7;N range measurements. The location of the mobile terminal may be estimated by applying a least squares method.

Method and system for estimating the location of a mobile terminal

The present invention relates to a transmission method for a transmitter having Nt transmit antennas. The method (1) spreads symbols in two dimensions by means of a spreading code, the symbols coming from a signal for transmission over Nfft sub-carriers via the Nt transmit antennas. The signal is transmitted with a power pethat is determined per symbol m, per user k=1, . . . , Nu, and per transmit antenna. The principle of the method (1) is to determine (2) a set of powers pethat is constant over a symbol frame, with the distribution of power amongst the users minimizing an overall error criterion under the constraint that the sum of the powers pein the set is equal to the product of the number of users multiplied by the average power emitted per symbol over the users.
