A limited-capability wireless terminal that is particularly well adapted for use in emergency situations, recreational activities and occasional calls is disclosed. The detachable wireless terminal does not have a display or a numeric keypad. Rather, the detachable wireless terminal has several 'one-touch' buttons that place a call to pre-programmed phone numbers when pressed. The detachable wireless terminal is small enough and light enough to be worn around a user's neck, received by a lanyard or a necklace. The wireless terminal detachably couples to a relatively larger docking device, which can be used to program it.

A method and apparatus for downloading information content to a wireless terminal. The information content is obtained from a content provider that is accessible over a network, such as the World Wide Web. The information content, which is available on a subscription basis, is downloaded directly to the wireless terminal. Access to the network, access to the content provider, and downloading the information content is performed automatically according to a schedule, in accordance with the subscription.

Method and apparatus for downloading information content to a wireless terminal

An electronic device includes a generic user interface that is interoperable with at least two modules to create different types of electronic devices (e.g., a wireless handset, a personal digital assistant, etc.) or different models (having different features) of the same type of device. The generic user interface has a look and feel that is similar an existing consumer electronics device and maintains this look and feel regardless of which module is connected to it.

A portable terminal having personal computing capability and wireless telecommunications capability. The portable terminal includes a display that is integral with, or otherwise attached to, a display. A housing is rotatably-coupled to the base and/or display. The portable terminal can be closed, wherein the housing overlies the base, or open, wherein base and housing flank the display. The display is fully visible to a user whether the portable terminal is open or closed. When open, a keyboard having keys that are apportioned between the housing and the base is accessible. To accommodate a change in the way in which a user is likely to hold and view the portable terminal when it's closed versus when it's open, the image in the display screen is rotated on command, or automatically, when the portable terminal is opened.

A wireless terminal is described whose software are more easily upgradable than many in the prior art. Furthermore, the first illustrative embodiment of the present invention is an arrangement in which a user can easily: (1) upgrade the software in a wireless terminal, (2) change the parameters affecting the operation of the wireless terminal, (3) enable and disable features and options on the wireless terminal, (4) install software modules onto the wireless terminal and remove them, (5) reconfigure the reconfigurable hardware on the wireless terminal, (6) extract performance data from the wireless terminal for analysis and testing of the wireless terminal, and (7) load contact information (e.g., names and associated telephone numbers, etc.) onto the wireless terminal. Furthermore, the user can easily do any of these functions in the field, himself or herself, without having to visit, or send the wireless terminal to, an authorized service facility.

A apparatus linearizing and technique for linearizing a non-linear power amplifier used in a transmitter of, e.g., a TDMA mobile wireless telephone. Linearization of the non-linear amplifier by changing the shape of the input signal is performed when the input signal level is high, thus increasing efficiency or reducing power consumption at that time, albeit at the cost of increased inter-symbol interference (ISI). However, since the input signals at that time are at a high level, the increased ISI can be tolerated and adjacent symbols can still be distinguished from one another. The invention allows use of a non-linear power amplifier which typically enjoys a lower current consumption than that of a linear power amplifier, thus increasing the time between battery recharges and/or reducing the overall size of the wireless telephone device. The power amplifier is operated in a linear mode when transmitted power is low, thus allowing differentiation between adjacent symbols (i.e., improvement of ISI). At high input power, the power amplifier is used in its non-linear mode to reduce current consumption. The signal shape is changed by changing the parameters of the root raised cosine filters. When the input level is low, the existing, otherwise conventional filter's parameters are used. However, when the input power level is high, modified parameters are used. Switching between the two sets of filter parameters is preferably performed at baseband. Thus, a relationship between RRCF filter parameters and the amount of spectrum utilized by the transmitted signal is utilized, and RRCF filter parameters are adjusted based on a desired limitation to an output spectrum.

A method for automatic frequency control in a wireless communication network having public frequency channels comprises the steps of: scanning the public frequency channels; locking the cellular base station to a signal on one of the public frequency channels; and returning the cellular base station to normal operation.

Automatic frequency control for a cellular base station

An adapter/converter circuit converts transmissions by a mobile telephone built for one standard (e.g., PCS) from the telephone transmit/base station receive frequency of that one standard to the telephone transmit/base station receive frequency of another standard (e.g., cellular), and converts transmissions by a base station or similar device (e.g., a base station simulator) from the telephone receive/base station transmit frequency of the one standard to the telephone receive/base station transmit frequency of the other standard. The two frequency conversions occur simultaneously on two parallel legs under the control of a PLL dual frequency synthesizer, which is in turn controlled by user input (in the case where the adapter is used to allow, e.g., PCS telephones to be tested on cellular test equipment) or by the base station (in the case where the adapter is used to allow, e.g., PCS telephones to be used with a cellular base station).

Mobile telephony standards converter

A transceiver operable in both the cellular and PCS frequency bands which uses a single voltage controlled local oscillator in an intermediate frequency stage for both the cellular and PCS signals. The oscillator is operative for upconverting transmitter signals and downconverting receive signals for both cellular operation and PCS operation. A second voltage controlled local oscillator in a stage between the transceiver antenna and the intermediate frequency stage is operative for only PCS operation to upconvert PCS transmitter signals and to downconvert PCS receive signals. This is accomplished by the use of a switchable intermediate frequency local oscillator in the transmitter path of both the cellular and PCS signals.

Dual band cellular/PCS transceiver

In one embodiment the present invention includes an arrangement for monitoring RF signals for use in a base station, said arrangement comprising a demodulation circuit operable to demodulate RF signals, an RF signal transceiver, and a controller. The RF signal transceiver is operable to transmit downlink RF signals to a wireless terminal and receive uplink RF signals from the wireless terminal. The RF transceiver further comprises: an antenna operable to receive first RF signals within a first frequency band and second RF signals within a second frequency band; a signal router connected to the antenna and having first and second ports, said signal router operable to provide signals within the first frequency band to the first port and signals within the second frequency band to the second port; a first RF switch connected to the first port; a first RF signal path connected to the first RF switch; a second RF signal path connected to the second port, and a second RF switch connected to the first RF signal path and the second RF signal path, said second RF switch having an output for connection to the demodulation circuit. The controller is operably connected to the first RF switch, the second RF switch, and the demodulation circuit. The controller causes the first RF switch to connect the first signal path to the first signal port and further causes the second RF switch to connect the first RF signal path to the demodulation circuit to facilitate monitoring of the first RF signals, and wherein the controller causes the second RF switch to connect the second signal path to the demodulation circuit to facilitate monitoring of the second RF signals.

Channel usage monitoring arrangement for base station

A cellular telecommunications device and method for achieving dual-mode cellular communications. The cellular telecommunication device comprises switchable loop filters, a loop filter switch controller, a programmable frequency synthesizer, and a voltage controlled oscillator arranged in a phase-locked loop configuration. The switchable loop filters comprise low-pass filters to optimize the performance of the device in both the analog and digital modes of cellular communications. Mode changes are facilitated by the switch controller which automatically configure the loop filters arrangement in response to a mode code sent to the cellular device from a cellular base station.
