An apparatus for applying a modifying ingredient to a mass of open-celled polyurethane foam includes the application of an excess of a liquid solution or dispersion of the modifying ingredient to the mass of foam. A fixed frame mounts a plurality of spaced, generally parallel lower backing rollers. A movable frame is mounted above the fixed frame and carries a plurality of spaced, generally parallel pressure rollers for movement toward and away from the backing rollers. A first adjustment device is provided for lowering the movable frame to move the pressure rollers toward the backing rollers, with the mass sandwiched therebetween. A plurality of second adjustment devices are spaced at locations about the rollers for adjusting the pressure between the backing rollers and the pressure rollers uniformly along the rollers both in a direction transversely to and in the direction of movement of the mass through the rollers.

Apparatus for applying a modifying ingredient to open-celled

An apparatus for cleaning a lighting fixture louver of the type which has parabolic cells that are open top and bottom. A cleaning roller of a graft polyol polyether urethane having an indentation load deflection of the order of 100 has a surface which consists of circumferentially discrete rows of individual cleaning lugs, and each row has enough lugs to clean an entire row of cells in a louver module, with a longitudinal and circumferential lug pitch equal to the pitch of the louver cells. Each cleaning lug has a perimetrical surface that may scrub the surface of the entire wall means of a cell, and has a radial depth slightly greater than the louver depth. The cleaning roller is journalled atop a cleaning liquid tank with its lower portion in the liquid, and a pressure roller surmounts the cleaning roller to press a louver onto the cleaning roller with a row of louver cells fully engaged with the row of cleaning lugs at the top of the roller. Rotation of the cleaning roller drives the louver endwise between the cleaning and pressure rollers. Drain pans return liquid that flows off the louver back into the tank.

A method of densifying open-celled polyurethane foam is provided in which heated air at a temperature between about 425.degree. F. and 460.degree. F. is circulated through a mass of the foam so as to rapidly and uniformly raise the temperature of the mass to between about 365.degree. F. and 435.degree. F., the mass is then compressed to a desired thickness while its temperature is maintained between 365.degree. F. and 435.degree. F., and the mass is then immediately permitted to cool.

Method of densifying open-celled polyurethane material

The method of treating open-celled polyurethane foam by the application of a modifying ingredient, such as a dye, pigment, color stabilizer or fire retardant, for example, wherein the method comprises the steps of (a) applying an excess of a liquid solution or dispersion of the modifying ingredient to a mass of the foam, (b) removing most of the excess of the liquid by squeezing the mass, (c) passing a gas, the temperature of which is between 350.degree. F. and 500.degree. F., through the material for a period of time sufficient (1) to raise the temperature of the polyurethane mass to a point at which the polyurethane will absorb the modifying ingredient, and (2) to vaporize the liquid present in the solution or dispersion, the period of time being insufficient to cause charring of the polyurethane, thereby accelerating the absorption of the modifying ingredient into the polyurethane, so as to permanently incorporate the modifying ingredient into the foam, and (d) allowing the mass to cool. The gas is chosen so as to be inert with respect to the foam, the modifying ingredient, and the liquid.
