A composition for coloring keratin fibers, containing an indoline, an indole, or a derivative thereof in combination with at least one amino acid or oligopeptide. The composition is useful for coloring human hair and restoring grey hair to its natural color. The formulation can be applied with atmospheric oxygen as the sole oxidizing agent.

An oxidation dye composition for keratin fibers containing component A and component B wherein component A is an oxidation dye precursor indoline derivative of the formula I: ##STR1## wherein each of R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3 is hydrogen or an alkyl group having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms; each of R.sup.4 and R.sup.5 is hydrogen or an alkyl group having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms or together with the oxygen atom to which they are attached represent an alkylenedioxy group containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms; or a salt thereof; and wherein component B is a metal salt having a non-oxidizing anion selected from the group consisting of a lithium, magnesium, calcium, aluminum and a zinc salt.

Emulsion-form hydrogen peroxide compositions in the form of an oil-in-water emulsion containing oil or fatty components, emulsifiers and hydrogen peroxide and, in addition, a thickening agent comprising a carboxyl-group containing polymer or copolymer soluble in aqueous alkali in a quantity of from about 1 to about 5% by weight solids, based on the weight of the composition. These compositions are particularly suitable as an oxidizing component in processes for the dyeing or lightening of hair resulting in improved depth of color and brightness.
