A method is for diagnosing the driving capability of a driver of a motor vehicle, in which changes in driver condition are ascertained from physiological measured values derived from the driver while driving in the vehicle and evaluated, and if the changes are serious, a warning is issued or remedial actions are initiated, wherein the physiological measured values ascertained while driving in the vehicle are combined by a corresponding expert system with health-relevant data for the driver ascertained in stationary fashion, and with data indicating driver stress that are estimated in particular from the instantaneous traffic situation and instantaneous operating state of the vehicle, and the changes in the driver's condition are weighted with the estimated driver stress and interpreted. An apparatus for performing the method is characterized in that the expert system is implemented in an onboard computer of the vehicle which is connected via a bus internal to the vehicle to a mobile driver condition sensor suite that supplies the physiological measured values, to a memory/transfer medium that delivers the biographical data and/or the health-relevant data ascertained in stationary fashion, and to an ACC system and driving direction system internal to the vehicle.

This simplifies the operating of an electrical device with high operating convenience. A positioning and navigation system for land vehicles features a simple and memory-conserving route entry method. Routes on maps can be specified by the junctions traversed by the route, so that entering only the junctions in memory uses much less space than prior art digital route storage systems which stored the coordinates of each point along the route. A trip progress information display shows the route vividly by using color or brightness contrast with the rest of the map. Additional direction of travel indications can be given, for example on a Head Up Display reflected off the inside of the windshield within the operator's field of view or by acoustic signals or speech-synthesized announcements. This results in particularly easy-to-follow guide to the driver or operator. Head-up displays on motor vehicles often have double images and interfering reflections on the windshield. To avoid these, arrangements of linear polarization filters or shutter foils are suggested, which have particularly high light transmission. Arrangements of filter plates on a combiner inside of the windshield are also advantageous.

A visual display monitor of an information system of a motor vehicle is connected not only with the usual engine and vehicle instrumentation, but also with a variety of electrical equipments installed in the motor vehicle which the driver may want to activate and control from time to time. The picture screen of the monitor, preferably of the LCD, electro-luminescence or plasma type, is subdivided into a report region at the top and a region for interactive information such as instructions menus and operation results. All the functions that would otherwise be performed by individual buttons, knobs and switches of the various equipments installed in the vehicle may be simply performed by a series of easily designated choices. One input device has a ball control for directing a cursor on the screen of the monitor, a menu button and an entry button, and may be located on the steering wheel. While a particular equipment that has been selected is being controlled, the corresponding field of the monitor selected by the cursor has its light-to-dark contrast reversed, to indicate that the corresponding equipment is in the process of being adjusted or controlled. Another input device is combined with a telephone handset used for telephone calls and has a recessed alphanumeric keyboard in its back for more detailed entries into the system. The information system is built around a digital speech memory which not only provides telephone answering messages and the like but also makes possible audible outputs of the system through the ratio receiver's loudspeaker so that the driver can be less dependent on visual outputs displayed on the monitor.
