An improvement to an electro-magnetically actuated piston has a first magnetic core and a second magnetic core. There is an electro-magnet coil for magnetically coupling the first and the second magnetic cores. The coil moves the first and second magnetic cores relatively, one to another. In the improvement itself the first and the second magnetic cores each comprise non-conductive core material or an array of a multiplicity of lamination plates. The non-conductive core material or each of the lamination plates are configured to receive a portion of the electro-magnet coil. The nonconductive core material or array of lamination plates encloses the coil and contains the magnetic field produced by the coil when the coil is energized. When the non-conductive core material or lamination plates of the first and second magnetic cores are in juxtaposition, the result is to generally isolate any magnetic materials adjacent the lamination plates from the magnetic flux produced when the coil is energized.

High impact electro press

An improved radiation source is disclosed, exploiting the spontaneous radiation generated from the interaction of an electron beam and a conductive grating. Conditions are defined for generating coherent or noncoherent radiation, and for extending the tunability of the radiation source from millimeter, IR, visible and UV wavelengths to x-ray wavelengths, and for generating multiple wavelengths simultaneously. Conditions are disclosed for enhancing the intensity of the spontaneous radiation, anf for modulating the radiation.

Radiation source

A fusion reactor (10) includes a sphere (12). Structure (20) is disposed within the interior of the sphere (12) for producing a magnetic field. Structure (24, 26) is circumferentially disposed around the exterior of the sphere (12) for producing a countermagnetic field. Structure (28, 32, 38, 46a) is provided for injecting a gas containing fusible ions into the sphere (12). Structure (30, 32, 38, 46) is also provided for heating the gas within the interior of the sphere (12). Structure (62, 64, 66, 68) is provided for extracting heat from the sphere (12).

Magnetic confinement nuclear energy generator

In a fusion reaction system where ions from two sources travel along helical paths toward each other in opposite senses and directions at a common radius in a cylindrical reaction zone, electrically conductive coil means are formed as a helix and placed in the zone whereby coupling of spontaneous space charge waves and helical coils is damped.

This invention relates to the control of ions orbiting in a cylindrical reaction space and more particularly to attenuation of instabilities in two counterflow streams of ions to focus the ions of both streams into a predetermined orbital reaction zone.

Control for orbiting charged particles

A nuclear fusion process for igniting a nuclear fusion pellet in a manner similar to that proposed for laser beams uses, an array of pulsed high energy combined particle beams focused to bombard the pellet for isentropically compressing it to a Fermi-degenerate state by thermal blow-off and balanced beam momentum transfer. Each combined particle beam is arranged to produce electric charge neutrality in a volume around the target so that space charge induced expansion is avoided. Each high energy combined beam is produced by merging in neutralizing proportion a convergently focused stream of positive particles and at least one convergently focused stream of negative particles to form an electrically neutralized combined beam having a deBroglie wavelength focal pattern at the region of pellet collision. The momentum and fusible mass of the particle beams reduce the ablation loss and result in a larger fraction of the pellet being available for fusion reaction. Existing particle beam technology makes high energies and high production efficiencies feasible for reducing the power input and reactor size necessary for practical nuclear fusion power.

Particle-induced thermonuclear fusion

Atomic nuclei undergo fusion reactions by forming two beams of fusible ions traveling at fusion producing velocities opposed in rotation along spiral paths having common axes (35a), common radii and occupy common space in a reaction zone (22) for fusion producing collisions of ions in one beam with ions in the other beam. Means including sources (16 and 17) produce the oppositely traveling circumferential beams. Radially directed electric fields are applied to the beams of strength increasing with increasing distance from sources (16 and 17) for beam compression into spiral paths of a common reduced diameter passing through common space in zone (22) to promote collisions between ions in the oppositely traveling beams as they travel in the common space.

Compressed beam directed particle nuclear energy generator

A source for a high density electrically neutral beam of combined positive and negative particles suitable for bombardment and heating of a pellet of nuclear fusion material to fusion temperature. A source mounted in a housing with a spherical substrate having positive ion emitter material thereon, first, second and third grids spaced from each other along the beam path, and electron emitters, for providing positive ion beams and electron beams at the same velocity for mixing to provide an overall electrically neutral beam. A source utilizing a zeolite type compound, such as B-eucryptite or sodium mordenite, which on heating emits positive ions of an element in the compound, such as lithium or sodium. A source housing including precision ceramic rings with metal flanges, with substrate and grid structures carried on the flanges, with the flanges joined as by heliarc welding at their peripheries to provide a rigid mechanical and vacuum tight structure, with metal spacer rings between ceramic rings when desired.

High density ion source

A fusion reaction system is provided wherein ions from two sources are forced by passage through magnetic and electric fields to travel toward each other in opposite senses and directions under confinement to common helical paths at a common radius in a cylindrical reaction zone by radial electric fields. The ions are bunched along said helical paths to establish a plurality of concentrations of the ions located at spaced points along the paths with the points being the same for ions from both sources. Structure in the reaction zone is arranged for establishing local variations in the radial electric fields to produce the localized concentrations of ions as they traverse their helical paths. Further, means may be provided to velocity modulate the ion sources for producing standing waves along the reaction paths having velocity nodes located at points in the reaction zone where the localized concentrations occur. Variable voltage sources are connected to modulate the velocities of ions from the two sources for producing standing waves in the reaction zone having velocity nodes spaced the same as the spacing between the localized concentrations. Phase adjustment means provide for positioning the velocity nodes at the same points as the points at which the localized concentrations occur.

Control of colliding ion beams

A nuclear fusion system is disclosed wherein a pair of beams are to traverse common helical paths in a reaction zone. Two sources of oppositely directed gaseous ions are provided for producing the beams with means for establishing helical flow of ions in common paths whose spins are aligned in both beams.

Directed beam fusion reaction with ion spin alignment

A data communication system has a transmitting antenna (18,19), a source (34) of data to be transmitted, a carrier source (45), and a modulator (41,42,43) located at a first point. The transmitting antenna includes an inductive winding (17) having an electrical length significantly smaller than the wavelength of the carrier. The carrier modulated with the data is applied to the transmitting antenna to generate a magnetic induction field about the first point. A receiving antenna (53,54) is located at a second point remote from the first point. The receiving antenna includes an inductive winding (53) having an electrical length significantly smaller than the wavelength of the carrier. The windings of the transmitting and receiving antennas enclose mutually exclusive regions and are uncoupled magnetically except for the medium between the first and second points. A portion of the field generated by the transmitting antenna is intercepted by the receiving antenna to produce a signal that is demodulated (51) and stored (52).

Wireless telemetry with magnetic induction field

A source housing including precision ceramic rings with metal flanges, with substrate and grid structures carried on the flanges, with the flanges joined as by heliarc welding at their peripheries to provide a rigid mechanical and vacuum tight structure, with metal spacer rings between ceramic rings when desired.
