The disclosure relates to a method of delaying viscosification of a well treatment fluid within a well or within a subterranean formation penetrated by a well by introducing into the well a hydratable viscosifying agent of particulates having a minimum of 40% retention on a 60 mesh screen and a minimum of 1% retention on a 20 mesh screen.

Loss of wellbore fluids (such as drilling fluids, completion fluids and workover fluids) into the flow passages of a subterranean formation may be reduced or eliminated by introducing into the wellbore in communication with the formation a composition containing a composite of a deformable core having a hardened coating which contains a viscosifying agent and, optionally, a crosslinking agent. The viscosity of the composition increases in-situ as the viscosifying agent, and optional crosslinking agent, disassociate from the deformable core and react. A fluid-impermeable barrier is thereby formed. The composites may also be used in spacers, well cements, workover and completion fluids as their need arises.

Set retarders of copolymers of at least one polymerizable ethylenically unsaturated monomer and at least one alkoxylated monomer are capable of delaying the hardening of a cementitious slurry when introduced into a subterranean formation until a downhole temperature greater than or equal to 500&#xb0; F. is obtained, even in the absence of an intensifier.

Methylhydroxyethyl cellulose may be used as an additive in cement slurries in the treatment of wells to prevent or reduce the occurrence of gas channeling. In addition to acting as a gas control additive, methylhydroxyethyl cellulose controls fluid loss, minimizes free fluid and stabilizes foam during cementing of the well.

Set retarders of copolymers of at least one polymerizable ethylenically unsaturated monomer and at least one alkoxylated sulfate, phosphate or ketonic salt are capable of delaying the hardening of a cementitious slurry when introduced into a subterranean formation until a downhole temperature greater than or equal to 500&#xb0; F. is obtained, even in the absence of an intensifier. The ethylenically unsaturated monomer is preferably a carboxylic acid, amido carboxylic acid, carboxylic acid ester, amido carboxylic acid ester, hydroxylated alkyl ester of a carboxylic acid or a hydroxylated amido carboxylic acid ester, sulfonic acid, phosphonic acid or amide as well as mixtures thereof and the alkoxylated sulfate, phosphate or ketonic salt is of the formula: wherein unit R1 is H or a C-Calkyl; R2 is &#x2014;(CHCH&#x2014;O&#x2014;)or (&#x2014;CHCHCH&#x2014;O&#x2014;)or a mixture thereof; n ranges from about 1 to about 100; X is an anionic radical selected from &#x2014;SO, &#x2014;POor &#x2014;COO or a water soluble cationic moiety which counterbalances the valence of the anionic radical X.

The storable, low-density, hydraulically-active, cementitious slurry of the invention is suitable for cementing within a subterranean formation for oil or gas wells. The low-density slurry comprises a hydraulically-active cementitious material, a set retarder, a plasticizer, glass or ceramic micro-spheres, and a strengthening agent. Further the slurry is substantially free of a suspension agent. The storable, low-density, hydraulically-active, cementitious slurry is made by adding glass or ceramic micro-spheres to a hydraulically-active cementitious material, adding a strengthening agent to the microsphere containing composition, and mixing the resulting composition with water, a set retarder, and a plasticizer to generate a slurry, wherein the set retarder is present in an amount sufficient to allow storage of the slurry.

Ultra low density cementitious slurries for use in cementing of oil and gas wells

A fluid loss and dispersant intensifier and method are shown for use in cementing oil and gas well bores. The intensifier includes an ethoxylate and a sulfonated dispersant type material. The intensifier package provides effective fluid loss control without adversely affecting the viscosity of the cement slurry.
