In an apparatus useful for sealing layers of a web comprised of plastic film layers to one another in a bag-making machine, a sealing drum having a cylindrical surface is employed. A sealing blanket is deployed about plural blanket rolls and about the sealing drum so that a substantial portion of the cylindrical surface of the sealing drum is wrapped by the sealing blanket with the wrapping surface facing the cylindrical surface while the remaining portion of the cylindrical surface is not wrapped thereby at any given time. A nip roll acts together with one of the blanket rolls so as to define a nip. An idle roll is located near the nip. The sealing apparatus is operable so that the sealing blanket is drawn through the nip with the wrapping surface facing the nip roll, so that the web is drawn through the nip, between the nip roll and the wrapping surface of the sealing blanket, then around the idle roll, and then around the sealing drum, between the wrapping surface of the sealing blanket and the cylindrical surface of the sealing drum. The nip roll is pressed pneumatically with an adjustable pressure toward the blanket roll acting together with the nip roll, whereby the nip roll controls the tension on the web being drawn through the nip.

Sealing apparatus useful in bag-making machine

In a winder for winding webs from a bag-making machine into rolls, a winding turret mounts four winding spindles, each having a web-winding portion and a pulley-mounting portion, which mounts a conjointly rotatable pulley and an independently rotatable pulley. A first timing belt and a second timing belt are arranged to be independently driven. The winding turret is indexable so that, in any indexed position, a first timing belt interengages the conjointly rotatable pulley mounted on the given winding spindle and interengages the independently rotatable pulley mounted on the next winding spindle and a second timing belt interengages the independently rotatable pulley mounted on the given winding spindle and interengages the conjointly rotatable pulley mounted on the next winding spindle. The rotational speeds of a motor driving a given winding spindle, whichever is being used to complete winding of a roll, and the rotational speed of a motor driving a web conveyor are measured. The motor driving the same winding spindle is adjusted so as to maintain a generally constant winding tension on a web being wound. A pair of infeeding rollers and a pair of separating rollers are operated so as to apply a generally constant winding tension to a web, except during intervals during which the surface speed of the separating rollers exceeds the surface speed of the infeeding rollers so as to separate the web at cross perforations.

Winder for use with bag-making machine

There is provided a blanket sealing bag machine having a variable diameter sealing drum comprising a plurality of spindles disposed at a first end of an axle and a like plurality of spindles disposed at an opposing end of the axle, the plurality of spindles being greater than sixteen spindles, the spindles extending radially from the axle. There is further provided a blanket sealing bag machine that maximizes the angle of blanket wrap.
